Commercial Description:
Jolly Roger himself smoked the malt for this Imperial Stout. This is a massive stout with a huge roasted maltiness and complex smoky, chocolate flavors coming through strong thanks to the gentle handpump and correct cellar temperature.

Sampled at the RBESG08 grand tasting. Black with a small brown head. Strong chocolate aroma initially, followed by notes of tar and coffee. Medium bodied and silky smooth. Nicely balanced, dry finish.

Pours an opaque near-black colour with a wispy tan head. The nose at first gives off metallic copper notes, but that fades as it warms. Notes of light fruits (honeydew, melon), some dark fruits (cherry), mild cocoa and some smoke. Overall, the nose is pretty weak for an impy stout. The flavour is a little on the light side, too, as it lacks roastiness and robustness of flavour. The smoke lingers for a while in the aftertaste, and it comes across as being a bit meaty. There are nice cocoa and cherry flavours to had also. The palate is creamy and full with soft carbonation.

Pours a dark brown opaque color with a small dark brown creamy head. Nose dark fruits, old pennies, and touch of cocoa. Initial taste is creamy, cocoa, roasted malt, and touch of dark fruits. Mid palate displays some smoke. Finishing with a good balancing hop, roasted malt, cocoa, coffee and mild creaminess. Palate duration is very good, medium body. Silky mouthfeel. Average head retention. Touch of the alcohol warmth. Interesting.

Black in colour, rich tan coloured head, good lacing. The aroma is of coffee, chocolate, lots of dark malts, nice roast, moderate sweetness. The flavour is quite sweet, noticable alcohol never becomes a distraction, rich, very roasty, lots of dark chocolate. Sweet roasty mouthfeel, medium/large body, medium carbonation. Finishes creamy, sweet, lingering with a bit of alcohol warmth.

A very well crafted imperial stout. Very well balanced and the alcohol doesn’t make an appearance until the very end. Good stuff.

650ml bottle obtained in a trade with kmweaver, thanks Ken.

Noogfest ’08. The body was perfectly black with a khaki colored head. The aroma was sweet chocolate and pancakes. There was also some sweet berry character. The taste was coffee with some burnt bread crust. Fairly subtle and pretty drinkable for the style.

Tap at HDG - viscous black beer, with a thick tan lace - almost spicy, woody aroma, with some smoky, almost meaty notes to it - thick, oily mouthfeel - sweet up front, but some cocoa bitterness, alcohol, and mild spicy character squash it pretty fast - after that it becomes seriously smoky and almost woody, which I loooooved - I wish more impys used smoked malt.
