Commercial Description:
Jolly Roger himself smoked the malt for this Imperial Stout. This is a massive stout with a huge roasted maltiness and complex smoky, chocolate flavors coming through strong thanks to the gentle handpump and correct cellar temperature.

Bottle. Some dark fruit, coffee, and chocolate in the aroma. Blended and typical of the style. The flavor is quite acidic, with lots of coffee and roasted character.

(Bottle 65 cl) Courtesy of sk8viking. Poors completely black and opaque with a light brown head. Concentrated almost vinous aroma of roasted malts and dried fruit. Full-bodied with plenty of roastiness, accents of prunes and sweet licorice. Warming alcohol in the finish that also is low in bitterness. A pleasant one. 021107

This was the first thing opened once everyone had arrived and gotten settled in. It made a nice contrast to the Barrel Aged Old Numbskull that preceded it (which was just as good as the last time I tried it even without a few years of age). This falls in my upper half of imperial stouts somewhere between solid and excellent. I can’t quite give it a 4 because it didn’t have enough substance but it was still well made.

Aroma / Appearance - A deep black body with stick lacing looked convincingly like an imperial stout as tannish lacing slid down the sides of the glass I was using. Expresso, licorice, plums and strong malt profiles played against dark chocolate or velvet cake. It does not quite have the complexity of Expedition or Speedway yet it was well balanced on the whole.

Flavor / Palate - Chewy velvet cake and licorice formed a reasonably solid contrast against the vinous finish. The alcohol was partially evident without being overpowering. The final touch of dry maltiness set this one in the ’above average’ category. It’s not the greatest imperial stout but definitely worth trying.

On tap at Zeno’s. Great stuff! Oily black with a tenacious brown head. Thick and creamy in the mouth, with tons of burnt malt, chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Incredibly drinkable.

This 1100th rating is brought to you by Tronraner. Thanks for hooking me up with this gem, buddy! The pour is ebony with a fairly dark head as well. Lacing is dense. This is obviously going to be a rich, viscous beer. The nose is very meaty for the style with hints of smoked beef, espresso, chocolate, tobacco, and molasses. Ah, nice creamy mouthfeel here. The flavor profile is deep with notes of espresso crema, smoke, licorice, peanut skins, and a milky sweetness that makes this a juicier brew than it might be otherwise. The finish is not all that dry despite the heavily roasted character. A few more sips reveal small hints of apples. Jolly Roger is another expertly crafted imperial stout whose smoky qualities really highlight the experience.

Bottle. Pours a black colour with amedium light brown head. Nice strong aroma of roasted malt, smoke, chocolate and liquorice. Very good mouthfeel. The flavour is full of roasted malt, roasted caramel and dark fruits with chocolate, liquorice, hops and smoke. Sweet, bitter, roasty and chocolate and liquorice finish. Really a great tasting Imp. Stout. Thanks a lot for sharing Sk8viking!

Aroma is smokey, with roasted and coffee notes, with some alcohol, and a hint of taboacco. comes off the pump completely opaque with a lush tan head that fades, but never leaves. Flavor is quite good, very intense at first, extreme roastiness, with some smokiness, alcohol, and coffee. good thick mouthfeel, although I wish it wouldn’t have been served as cold. Good impy.
