kramer (1864), sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 15, 2007 On cask, at brewpub. Pours a pitch black body with a dark brown head composed of quite large bubbles for being on cask. Lots of heavy lacing. Served way way too cold, I had to wait till I was mostly done with my lunch till it warmed up to proper temperature. The nose is heavy roast with caramel, smoke, licorice, bakers chocolate, and light alcohol. Some plum and fig fruitiness as well. Great complex malt malt profile, a blend of chocolate, roast, caramel, and smoke with some plum and fig fruitiness. Zero alcohol apparency, dangerously drinkable in big gulps. Mouthfeel is very soft and creamy, not sticky at all, with great soft cask carbonation. Finish is quite mouthcoating and clingy, but not cloying. Overall, just an awesome beer, I put this just a hair better than the BA version. Ottos has really been putting out some great stuff these days.
JB175 (1319), Holland, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 13, 2008 Bottle - Big, dark brown color. Heavy, oasty, smoky aroma dominated by wood, chocolate, and roast with a lot of big scents. Flavor is roasty and smoky with some dark coffee, chocolate, and a tad of licorice. Really nice impy stout that satisfies. pivnizub (3768), Porúří, Germany Aug 11, 2008 Bottle (RBESG 08): Intensely black; chocolate, cacao in the nose; full bitter-sweet flavour, full bodied, but easy-drinking; lingering, warming chocolatey finish Marsiblursi (1378), Göteborg, Sweden Aug 10, 2008 (Bottle) Pours black. The aroma is of sweet dark berries and chocolate up front with undertones of tobacco, blue and blackberries, molasses, dark bread, coffee and hints of brown sugar. The flavour is medium roasted and medium hoppy bitter with tones of mild molasses, brown sugar, tar, salt liquorice, dark bread and tobacco. The mouthfeel is light oily and smooth with dry finish. Some alcohol warmth is present. Medium to full bodied. DSG (835), Yuvalim, Israel Aug 9, 2008 (6/29/08) Bottle sample at RBESG08 grand tasting in Plzen. Black-colored with a brown head. Aroma of heavily roasted malt, some chocolate and alcohol. Sweet flavor with almost burnt malt, dark chocolate and a bit of dark fruitiness. Quite full-bodied. RCL (999), Boston, Massachusetts, USA Aug 5, 2008 Nice lightly smokey aroma, a bit like hickory charcoal. Cola and, especially, rootbeer flavors with hints of licorice. 9% ABV is almost totally undetectable. Very nice.
