willblake (2160), Belcamp, Maryland, USA Apr 22, 2008 20070622 12oz hand bottled thanks to Paul. Dark brown with ruby hints. Sturdy, off-white head is impressive considering it’s probably 3 months old. Nice smoky aroma mixed with an odd note of white glue (huh?) Thin but soft mouthfeel. Hoppy bitterness and quick tart-smoky bite to finish. Good stuff. Dickinsonbeer (3434), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Apr 23, 2007 Tap at brewpub. Pours a nice woody deep copper and a foamy sticky almost white head. Aroma is woody, campfire smoke, and lightly smoked meats. Smoke isnt overpowering, but is smooth all around and is very enjoyable. Goes well with some sweet malts in the flavor, light roast, caramel, nuts etc. Full mouthfeel, and very savory. Smooth with no medicinal character which is nice. Great rauchbier. CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA Aug 19, 2007 On tap at the brewpub on 4/9/07: Pours a dark copper with mahogany hues and a wispy, clingy-lacing white head. Nice, smoky aroma explodes out of the glass with a touch of caramel. Starts fairly full and sweet with a nice smoky character and a smooth, earthy bittersweet finish. A nice, true to style rauchbier. DocLock (4648), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 11, 2007 Draft at the brewpub. I beg to differ with those that found little smoke here. If Scherlenka is a 9, then this is a 6 or so. Medium copper pour, with minimal off-white head. The aroma is caramel malty and smoky. Not as intense as some, but the smoky aroma is there. The flavor is smoked caramel malt with mild hops and slight brown sugary fruit. I enjoyed this one a lot. Saarlander (1577), Saarlouis, Germany Jun 17, 2007 A hand bottled sample, from Dickinsonbeer! Smelled nothing when poured, let it sit for a couple minutes, then roasted malt, smoke jumped out. Nice drinking smoked beer, not overpowering at all, but flavorful, abit sweet, but that was ok, god I can’t wait to get home again, and try more Rauchbier! Danke Paul! cbrixius (136), Newberrytown, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 15, 2007 Draft at the brewery. I enjoyed not too overpowering smokiness that this rauchbier exhibited. The beer was clear, dark brown ale that went well with dinner. Not very complex, and had a low hop profile. Overall slightly above average. Ty5592 (1015), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 19, 2007 Hand bottle drunk 8/21. Dark amber color. Smokey, light fruity aroma. Smooth smokey taste with some tobacco notes. Nice malt profile with medium smokeyness in the finish. One of the better smoked beers I’ve had. dmac (1423), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Jun 26, 2007 12 oz hand bottle shared with willblake thanks to Dickinsonbeer. Poured a dark reddish/brown with a nice frothy white head. Aroma was lots of smoke but not harsh it was just dominant compared to the other aromas. The smoke wasn’t as dominant in the flavor but was still there. Very nice stuff for something handbottled at a brewpub several minths ago.
