Dredd (371), Ormond, Australia Aug 1, 2008 Enjoyable beer. Pour is nice reddish-amber with anice off white head that lasts. Aroma is mainly sweet malts. Flavour is definately malt driven with nice rounded character, toffee, sugar some slight vegemite coming in for a brief second. Finish is reasonable with the roasted malts leaving a footprint on the back palate and some bitterness giving rounding it off.
MBison (445), Southern Highlands, Australia Nov 27, 2008 Bottle (330ml). Poured very dark hazy copper with a good sized, dense, frothy, off-white head which was mostly lasting (unlike most of the Otway Estate beers). Aroma was of biscuity malts with light earthy notes, cranberries, toffee and some buttery marmalade. Flavor was quite sweet (like most Irish ales) with a extremely light bitterness, smooth caramel malts, cranberries, blackberries, brown sugar and almond biscuits in the finish. Light to medium bodied with soft carbonation, a somewhat creamy mouthfeel, watery texture and an average lasting finish. bluevegie (1814), Perth, Australia Nov 18, 2008 Red body with small head. Malty flavour with just enough hops to almost balance it out. Drinkable - easily but not a standout. Stew41 (899), Caulfield, Australia Aug 6, 2008 Interesting. Murky dull red / brown in colour with a forgettable head. Nose doesn’t seem right for the style but is very attractive; estery, fruity, mild piney notes, and maybe a little malt sweetness. Most of these characters pop up again in the palate, albeit at a much lower ’volume’. Seems thin in some respects given there is quite a high level or carbination, and a very slight burnt rubber note distracts me a touch. Flavours tail off completely at the finish. Notwithstanding, I can’t help but find this beer attractive. andreic (22), Australia Jul 2, 2008 Pretty clear red colour. Small just off white head that didn’t last (probably my glass). Low to medium carbonation. Aroma was strong sweet malt, slightly earthy, hints of fruit. Tasted very malty and nutty. Quite sweet - not very bitter. Seems fairly thin body and has a fairly dry finish. An interesting beer but I don’t think I could drink many of these.
