Dredd (371), Ormond, Australia Aug 2, 2008 Aroma is lots of estery tropical fruit and a pinch of spice. Appearance is neat, Pours cloudy orange with a big white head. Flavours are good, some pineapple, slight orange that has some decent finish unlike most other Aussie Saison’s that i’ve tried. Their is a voluptuous mouth feel here that is initially overbearing but becomes more pleasant as the beer goes on, i’d go along with mullet’s comments of it being almost custardy in texture. Is a very well made beer, if only they packaged it with a more inspirational label!!
gam (618), brisbane, Australia Nov 20, 2008 Good frothy head, carbonation is good, misty orange coloured beer.Aroma wheat clove, maltiness, sweetness of sugar, hop notrs.Flavour bitter wheat at first and right through the drink, hop taste mild, sour flanders style, finish sour dry,not to my liking. bluevegie (1814), Perth, Australia Nov 18, 2008 Dull cloudy orangey body with good size white head. Didn’t really go for the aroma, some white pepper but mainly I got the babies nappies smell. Taste was better, yeast and some citrus notes, not a lot of spice and not ery focussed. I didn’t rate this very high but others I tried it with liked it. mullet (767), Melbourne, Australia Jul 29, 2008 Nice presentation in the 750mL bottle but I still think their labels are butt ugly. Not that I care about such stuff. It pours hazy from the get-go, even though it seemed clear in the bottle. Dull orange liquid covered with a decent white head. The aroma is really rather Dupont-like, though on the 3724 end of the spectrum if you can make such a distinction. Lots of tropical fruit, white pepper and coconut with some of that weird hand cream flavour you seem to get from 3724 and which Chevalier Saison has in spades. There’s custardy, vanilla ice cream malt sweetness and a touch of toasted malt graininess. There’s a touch of Swiss cheese, and a fairly alkaline impression. It finishes dryish despite very little hop presence. It’s a very credible-tasting (and particularly smelling) attempt at a saison, but it’s nowhere near the drinkability of the real deal. Quality of the malt flavour is definitely a long way behind Dupont, and the hopping and carbonation are quite a bit lower too. The mouthfeel is also a bit broad and flabby, whereas Dupont is lean and focussed. But all that said, it’s probably the best Australian attempt at a saison that you can buy around here (Feral’s is still number one though). Fairly impressive, and not far off being really good.
