Framboise is a classic among the Belgian beers created by adding whole fresh raspberries (250 g/l)to a blend of young and old lambic. Framboise Oud Beersel is the missing link between beer and wine and is served chilled in flute glasses.

As soon as I started pouring I was struck by the raspberry jam aroma. It clued me in that this one wouldnít be the sour lambic that I wanted but I canít deny the appeal of such an aroma. The appearance was grand. All dark and stuff with one of those huge heads that makes a column in the middle and then collapses on himself. Alas, this is just a decently made but overly sweet raspberry soda lambic. I sort of like them but I donít really find them satisfying. I canít deny that thereís some good craftsmanship behind these things but whatever itís boring.

375ml green bottle, corked. Rediish pour, maybe some purple hues in there too.Clear. Head is pinkish, fairly small. Nose has sweet raspberry, jsut a touch of tartness. In the mouth the beer has sour raspberry, vinegar notes, wood. A little tangy, a little dry. Crisp and lively.

On tap at Erzbierschof. Dark purpleish color with large head that dissipates quickly. Sweet intense raspberry flavour, not too much tartness. Taste is rather sweet and slightly sour. Rather light to medium body, nothing much to critizise, but also not too distinct. Easier to drink than Cantillon?s products, but not as dry and complex. Really lecker.

Bottle 0.375l. Pours deep red with light pink head. Aroma is full of raspberries and some cherries. Very fruity. Taste is light bitter, light to medium sweet, light to medium sour, raspberries, cherries. Aftertaste is rather sweet and somehow sticky. It reminds me of artificial sweetener. Strange. Could be much drier and sour. Ok but a bit disappointing.

Dark ruby transparent beer with a weak head and nice carbonation. Smell is berries and subtle wood. Quiet sweet. Taste is sour watery with an astringent finish. Citric peels finish and a herby alcoholic finish.

Bottle 375ml. Pours purple with low off-white head. No serious lacing. Aroma is of raspberries, cherries. Taste is of raspberries, cherries, acidity, fruits. Lambic features are only noticable via acidity for me. No serious funk. Palate: Light-medium body. Medium carbonation. Overall: Fruity. Mildly acid (less than expected). Good drinkability. Mouth drying.

Traditional framboise, i.e. made of pure lambic and fresh fruit without added sugar. Dirty pinkish, loose head, quickly degenerating but leaving a rim on the edge of the glass. Colour is burgundy with pinkish and orangey hue, transparent, almost clear after slow and careful pouring, but darkish red-brown with chunks of dead yeast after adding the deposit. Powerful, somewhat weird and amazingly complex aroma of indeed red raspberries but also tomato ketchup, old sherry, earth, wet hay, Worcestershire sauce, liquorice candy, pipe tobacco, barnyard, pomegranate and, very prominently, the kind of artisanal elderberry syrup my late grandmother tried to cure a persistent cough with. Taste kicks off with a citric acidity cleansing the mouth, medium carbonation, softened and sweetened by tons of fresh fruit (pure raspberry juice and raspberry bushes without any sign of added sugar, but accents of elderberry and tomato as well), tart and funky but not too agressive, mellow lactic acidity, ever more dry towards the finish, fruity esters, hay, ending very woody and leafy hop bitter. This is something else: couldnít be further away from e.g. Lindemans Framboise. A purely artisanal barnyard beer, stubborn and demanding, very unlike the overtly sweet ladiesí framboises most people are more or less familiar with. A challenge, but I did like 3 Fonteinenís framboise a bit better, not to mention the Cantillon products containing raspberries. It was a bad idea letting this sit in my cellar for a year: fruit lambics are at their best when they just left the brewery. I should re-taste this when young as soon as possible.

375 ml corked & caged green bottle, from the Norwegian importer. ABV is 5.0%. Beautiful deep red colour, moderate pink head. Strong and lovely aroma of ripe raspberries, a hint of cherry kernels. Fairly dry flavour, not very sour, raspberries of course, but not overwhelming. The finish is a bit "empty".

Bottle poured into a snifter. I drank this one right after the Geuze and Kriek.

A - Pours murky pink with a nice one finger tall pink head leaving very little lace down the glass. Not as bubbly as the kriek but close.

S - Smells of dulled raspberry puree, musty funk, light lactic sourness, wet oak, and some definite buttery notes that I am sure arenít supposed to be there...

T - Starts off with a nice dose of dank funk quickly giving way to some light raspberry sweetness, drying oak tannins, and very dull lactic sourness. The finish is dry with some lingering sweetness. I donít get a lot of the buttery notes I detected in the nose but this one is still a bit of a letdown.

M - Medium body and flavor with moderately high carbonation. This one isnít as carbonated as the kriek but it is still a little bit too much.

O - This was the worst of the three. The fruit was really only present in the taste and even there it was a bit dull. Add to that the disappointing nose and this one really isnít on par with its counterparts.

Bottle. Pours deep, clear ruby red with a small pink head. Aroma has both sour and unripe raspberries, as well as sweeter, more ripe ones. Smells very juicy, and besides a slight tartness, raspberries are the only prominent aroma to find. Taste has a great balance between the sour and sweet, and becomes the most sessionable of lambics that i have ever tasted. Very juicy raspberries, but still with that classic dryness to it. All this being said, itís not crazy flavorfull. High carbonation and low, dry body. Higly recommendable for new lambic drinkers, that donít want it too sweet either!
