Oud Beersel Kriek Lambic from Brouwerij Oud Beersel is a classic among Belgian beers. Created by adding whole fresh cherries to young lambic, which provides both seasoning and sparks another fermentation resulting in a product of great complexity. It has the acidity of champagne, the bouquet and delicate flavor of cherries, and balance of almondy dryness. Oud Beersel Kriek is the missing link between beer and wine.

DISCLAIMER: This is a special export version, initially made by Frank Boon, but it is continued by the new owners of Oud Beersel. It is different as it is pasteurised and some sugar was added, this to preserve the fruit flavour which normally disappear after 6 months. So if you had a Kriek from Oud Beersel, please check whether you had the "Oude Kriek" variant or the this version for export only.

One of the few lambics Available at Retail and AL, and it is a poor example of the style. Aroma is sweet dominated by cherry and 7-up. Taste is sugary sweet with no sour and only the slightest hint of barnyard. Palate is a nice dry and is about the only fulfilled expectation of a Kriek.

Definitely cared for the Oude version more than this, though it’s been a long while since I had that one. This is perhaps fruitier, but one note, and a little musty like the tripel. Hints of cheese. Still enjoyable, but not for the coin.

Pours murky pinkish purple with one finger of loose light purple head diminishing gradually to a thin cap, spotty lacing. (3/5) Nose is sour cherries, light funk, some vinous notes. (8/10) Taste is low to moderate sweet, moderate tart. (8/10) Medium body, moderate to low carbonation, off-dry tart finish. (4/5) Well, let’s get this out of the way right away: it’s probably not worth the price tag. That being said, it’s a very good, very authentic kriek, if maybe very slightly sweeter than some non-export Belgian krieks I’ve had, like Mort Subite. Pretty similar to the Boon Kriek (and I suspect for good reason since it was apparently originally made by Boon). The cherry taste is neither cloying nor medicinal, making this a very pleasant drink. (16/20)

Deep cherry red pour with pink head and lace. Aroma is large cherry with a touch of sour and light floral notes. Flavor is deep black cherry with a light touch of funk. A lot of sweetness and no hops. A light bodied fizzy beer.

375 ml bottle to snifter. Looks good; a hazy amberish brown with off-white head that steadily dissipates into bubbly lacing. Smells solid; tart and a bit funky with a strong cherry presence that I like, but is a touch medicinal. Tastes like it smells with a medium-bodied mouthfeel. Good beer.
