Oud Beersel Kriek Lambic from Brouwerij Oud Beersel is a classic among Belgian beers. Created by adding whole fresh cherries to young lambic, which provides both seasoning and sparks another fermentation resulting in a product of great complexity. It has the acidity of champagne, the bouquet and delicate flavor of cherries, and balance of almondy dryness. Oud Beersel Kriek is the missing link between beer and wine.

DISCLAIMER: This is a special export version, initially made by Frank Boon, but it is continued by the new owners of Oud Beersel. It is different as it is pasteurised and some sugar was added, this to preserve the fruit flavour which normally disappear after 6 months. So if you had a Kriek from Oud Beersel, please check whether you had the "Oude Kriek" variant or the this version for export only.

One of the few lambics Available at Retail and AL, and it is a poor example of the style. Aroma is sweet dominated by cherry and 7-up. Taste is sugary sweet with no sour and only the slightest hint of barnyard. Palate is a nice dry and is about the only fulfilled expectation of a Kriek.

Pours hazy dark red with a small light pink head that settles to a ring and has good lacing. Aroma of cherries and some sweetness with a little oak. Taste dark cherries and fruitiness with some sweetness, mild oak and a bit tart and grassy. Finishes semi dry. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Not very complex and a bit too candy sweet for my taste.

375ml bottle pours deep crimson color with a 2 finger light pink head that leaves some spotted lacing. Aroma is dominated by cherries with hints of yeast. Taste is a cherry tartness with a malty sweetness and a very dry finish. Light to medium body with generous carbonation. Good brew for the style and recommended.

375 green bottle, corked, caged. Red pour, pretty clear. Pink foam, actually a LOT of foam for the style, surprisngly clingy. Nose has cotton candy and cherries. Taste has a big juicy, sharp cherry start, a little sweetness. Ends with some wood and dryness. Not as complex as I was hoping, but OK.

With a sharp aroma of cherries and a deep red appearance this kriek has all the sweetness but non of the sour tones of a typical Belgian beer. Excellent flavour and a little resonating flavour lingering on the tongue.

Bottle best before 25/04/2016, so I imagine it’s from 2011. Pours a deep ruby purple with bubbly reddish white head. Aroma is mild funk with overlying sweet cherry and wine grape musk. Taste follows, really sweet and very little sour. Bubbly carbonation and syrupy mouth. Kind of a bit disappointed, but not as bad as a Lindemann’s at least.

A: Purple Hue, Passes Mild Light, White Head Ring, Some Lacing S: Pinot Noir, Mildly Bitter Cherry T: Mild Pinot Noir, Mild Cherry M: Average Carbonation, Light to Medium Bodied, Mildly Tart Overall, not a bad Kriek, had more of a red wine flavor to it, which I liked for the mild tartness, paid $6 for the 375ml....probably not worth it at that price IMO.

375ml bottle from IPB.
Appearance : Deep red with small pink-ish head.
Aroma : Rich maraschino cherries. Slightly cough syrup cherries. Light spicy notes. Cherry sweets.
Taste : Sweet cherries. Less sweet than the nose suggests. Cherry pie. Light cough syrup notes.
Palate : Soft carbonation. Medium bodied. Semi dry semi sweet finish. Definitely on the sweet side of the style.
Overall : Interesting but not worth having again for me. Nice cherry flavors but not dry enough and a bit too soft on the carbonation. Finish is also a bit short. Not much funk and just a hint of acidity.

37.5 cl.
