COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Geuze is a classic among the Belgian Ales, following spontaneous fermentation in wooden barrels (no yeast or sugar added), young and old Lambic are blended; which results in a dry, tart and fruity wine like taste. Oud Beersel Geuze Ale is the white sparkling wine of the ale world.

UPDATED: JUN 26, 2005 Right away, I had a huge, active head and a nice, cloudy, golden color. The aroma had apple, vinegar and some grass. The flavor is very sour, like concentrated lemon juice. A little barnyard and hay. Gets slightly smoother with a little apple and some grass. Will try this again.

Rating #700 - The folks inthe chat room helped me pick this one out. Beautiful pale amber saprkling body. The lively bubbles cascade to the top forming a pillowy white head. The aroma is medium tart and sour with apple, leather, and hay predominant. Ahhh now for the flavor, perfectly sour and complex. Apple and cheese seem to play interesting parts. Slighlty acidic. Dry bubbly finish. Damn fine brew. The best of this style that I have yet had.

And finally. The last two beers of the London Drinker festival . The Girardin and Oud Beersel gueuzes tasted side by side. Unfortunately, as these were beers number 29 and 30 of the day, I would be hard pressed to claim that my critical faculties were at their sharpest. I found the Girardin and the Beersel to be pretty closely matched and vying with the Drie Fonteinen for number one status. I think the Girardin just edged it. As Beersel has now closed down and the remaining stocks went to Frank Boon (I don't know whether he is going to bottle it as Oud Beersel), this is a last chance to sample the original product. A bit more rustic than the Girardin - a little harsher and more woody. Like the Girardin, it also has a lot of apple character, but in a fruitier and less cider accented way. Excellent.

This gueuze pours with a golden body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. The aroma is tart yet slightly sweet and vinious with a slight woodiness. The flavor is tart yet slightly sweet with a touch of oakey woodiness and vinious notes. Light to medium bodied and dry.

Sour fruity aroma, sour-apple flavor with a crisp aftertaste. My bottle was a 2002 vintage.

(375ml bottle) Pours a large, frothy, white head and a cloudy amber body. High quantity of tiny sedimentation. Light carbonation. Nose of sour apples, lemon and vinegar. Very tart flavour of lemon and Empire apples. Quick dry finish. Very good gueuze!

Cloudy gold-orange with a lofty and lasting, tightly packed white head. Very strong nose: sharp, nose-burning yeast and lemon. Spritzy and champagne-like. Sour and funky (but not enough barnyard!), with aromas/flavors of vinegar, Granny Smith apples, hay, fat free multi-grain crackers, lemon and lime (yes, I taste lime, too!). Dry finish. A little bitterness showed up in the aftertaste, along with more tartness (really made me think of Sprees candies). Geud Geuze!

Golden clouds floating beneath a bubbly white sky. Citrus battles apples for control of your nose but in the end it's the cider vinegar that dominates both. The vinegar then takes bags of oranges and lemons for a stroll around the four corners of your mouth and smoothly exits, leaving only a lingering sourness for a short while. Dry but not too dry - tartness is refreshing, not overpowering. Nice.

Hazy yellow color, and virtually no head. The suspended particles made it look kind of neat. Sour aroma for sure, mainly fruits, and vinegar. The sour flavor was not overpowering in this one at all. It seemed rather reserved, but balanced nicely. Lemons, apples, and something bitter just at the end. Very dry in the finish. Interesting enough to make you come back for more.

Light orange-copper in colour. Aroma had a nice sourness, with some citrus and apples, acidity and some cider vinegar. Flavour was very tart, lots of citrus(lemons and oranges), soft amount of vinegar, smooth and very refreshing. Finished dry but not until maybe 10 seconds after swallowing with a mild bitterness. Very refreshing.
