Aroma: Stable, gun powder, fruit, cheese (parmesan). Nice head, hazy. Sour taste, taste like grape fruit (sour and bitter). A bit harsh palate. An interesting product but could be more balanced.

Chilled and into a straight-wall Lambic glass. Soft, pastel orange and misted by yeast. Very fine, very intermittent carbonation fares a short lived foam. A white film lasts the length. VInous, plump, beyond dry nose but hinting at Chenin and Chardonnay grape juice, boiled rice, soft phenols, hessian sack and lime coola cordial. Very fruity, very vinous, wine-like with plenty of white wine in the length. lime, lemon, tangy and sour with supple fruit sweetness balancing. Hints at oak, pine, light must in the finish. Lightly spritzy, mouth-filling yet light in body; definitely holds on the palate. This is refreshing, but lacks the depth of the greater spontaneously fermented ales. A great Gueuze for those unfamiliar to the style. (37,5cL, BB 05/11/22[?], The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

Bière légèrement acide, mais pour une geuze, douce. Forte odeure non rance. goût classique de la geuze adouci. Bière très bien équilibré. Parfait pour découvrir la geuze.

Enjoyable lambic aroma. Not the stinky sweaty type. Abundant gas upon opening the bottle. Just the right amount of acidity for those who don’t enjoy overly acid beer.

Bouteille: Deep golden, hazy with floaties, stable creamy off-White head; fruit-vinegar - mainly - in the nose, some cellary notes, not very "Bretty", residual caramel detectable, too; moderate sour flavour with a delicate sweetness, tart and stringent MF, medium bodied; lingering tart-sour finish, again is a faint sweetness detectable. Good, but not the real Thing...

Scrumptiously sour she be! The hazy, bright orange copper liquid is festooned with a thick white head. Notes of tart fruit, yeast, white wine and wheat bring a complex bouquet forth. Quite tart and fruity, a sour Greek yogurt taste is left on the tongue. This fun brew has a very fizzy and medium carbonated body with the fizz really resting in the mouth. A great beer for a relaxing moment.

I once had the original version of this (on more than one occasion), still made by Henri Vandervelden, but by the time I went to Beersel to visit his lambic brewery, it had just closed down. Fortunately a few young lambic afficionados reopened it and resurrected this classic geuze on the Belgian beer map. Nowadays quite easily available - the bottle I’m tasting now was bought at a Delhaize supermarket. Pours a warm, light orange blonde with strong fizz, a bit hazy at first but equally clouded with deposit, with a stable, dense, medium thick, crackling, off-white and utterly stable head consisting of tiny bubbles closely packed together. Strong aroma with everything you’d expect from an authentic, undiluted lambic: Brett horseblanket, leather and barnyard odours abound, paired with a very strong estery fruitiness; impressions of lemon peel, very old sherry, sweat, rancid butter, wet hay, ’brut’ champagne, grass, sour yoghurt, orange, roses, raspberry vinegar, passion fruit, earth, dust, old bread. Taste is crisp and estery, with a lemony acidity drying the palate, delicately fizzy carbonation on the tongue as in a lambrusco, oranges and unripe green plums, light bready malts, soft wheaty sourishness and tart lactic acidity, all blended in one very refreshing experience. Yeastiness with soft spicy notes dominates the finish, which is completely dried by the various sour flavours and woody tannins but a late and brief, leafy hop bitterishness also comes up, subtle enough though, in order not to disturb the crisp and tart profile. Extremely thirst-quenching and elegant, not too ’biting’ like some other examples, but gracious and showing all the unrivalled complexity which defines this greatest of beer styles. After years of perfection, I think the new guys at Oud Beersel managed to equal the original Vandervelde version completely. I think I still have a Vandervelde edition from 2001 lying around in the cellar somewhere so next time I have this, I’ll taste them side by side, just to make sure. For now: an excellent geuze indeed and a classic fortunately saved from oblivion. Kudos!

Bottle. Pours hazy orange with white head. Aroma is very fruity, lots of plums, citrusy, tropical, yeasty. Taste is tart, Brett, light, crisp, very effervescent, fruity backbone. Overall, a very traditional Gueze- very solid and true to style.

375ml bottle at home. Pale orange/golden with a medium slightly off-white head. Medium body with heavy carbonation. Pretty sour with some sweet And bitter tones. Green apple, citrus, hay, wood and some spices. A decent gueuze.
