bozoNZ (481), Christchurch, New Zealand May 28, 2007 330ml at the Australian - Sydney. Deep copper red. Almost a barley nose, no head of note. Relatively sweet, moderate chilli thru the mid / latter stages. I just don’t get chilli beers - why? Papsoe (14642), Frederiksberg, Denmark Mar 12, 2008 (Bottle 33 cl) Clear amber golden with a creamy, off-white head. Aroma of chili and metal. Light in body, notes of sweet caramel and capsicum rather than chili. This is not burning hot as other chili beers I’ve had, just lightly spicy. No real bitterness. A very mild chili beer. 030208 bridge (659), Sydney, Australia Aug 13, 2006 Updated: Oct 11, 2006The new incarnation of this beer must be a lot better than the previous one. Having said that, there’s something about chilli in beer that just doesn’t seem right. It poured medium dark brown with a small head. Sweet and fruity aroma with a touch of spice (cinnamon?), all of which come through very obviously on tasting - nothing hidden here. The chilli is pretty optimal in my opinion, any less it wouldn’t justify the name and any more and my oesophagus would have a fit. It seems a beer like this is relying on the chilli to deliver what the hops don’t - I know what I’d prefer. madquacker (706), Canberra ACT, Australia Dec 28, 2007 I was put off Chilli Beers by a dodgy beer i bought at Salamander Mkts in Hobart some years ago. This is a vast improvement on that... but still what a stupid idea to add chilli to beer. Drinks like a normal beer at first and then some chilli flesh taste kicks in. Is ok to drink as a novelty but abit of a gimmick. Dredd (484), Ormond, Australia May 7, 2004 This is an interesting one, initial sweet taste upfront followed by a mild chilli aftertaste. Maybe the beer i had came for a better batch than the other reviewers since it did have a chilli presence. bluevegie (2169), Perth, Australia Mar 10, 2007 Keep seeming to get butterscotch on the nose from most of these beers. Pours darker than expected, cherry amber body with same head. Chilli is in there but not helping out much. Muggus69 (500), Sydney, Australia Oct 16, 2007 330ml bottle served chilled. I’ve gotta mention my skepticism of chilli beers after a bad experience I had with a mates homebrewed chilli beer, needless to say, it was like drinking tabasco sauce, and put me off the idea of using such a thing in a beer. Slight capsicum on the nose, some butterscotch maltiness as in the pils. Pours a clean amber body with a dense bit of offwhite head and lace. Mild carbonation, watery body. Some underlying biscuity/butterscotch malt flavour, layer with a quite a bit of green capsicum flavour, and heat, i’d say may 2 stars at tops. Finishes warming with an offputting overcooked vegetable note. Not the worst i’ve tried but why they bother. Pyobon (266), Sydney, Australia Oct 10, 2007 Disappointing. Amber, no head. The base beer was not terribly good, maybe a bit sweet or malty. The chilli could be tasted but was not exactly distinctive and there was no noticeable burn.
