4.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
This beer is based on a classic German beer style called kölsch, which is a delicate, light, fruity ale brewed in the city of Köln, or Cologne, Germany. It is a very drinkable, very refreshing beer style, and when done right is a beer you just can not get enough of. Many brewpubs offer this style, but far too many of them do not get it right. Outer Banks Brewing Station does. Brewed with pale malt, Saaz, Spalt, and Perle hops, and coming in at a moderate 4.8% abv. Ölsch is the kind of beer to have, "when you are having more than one."
I was fortunate to spend some time in Köln early this year, and enjoyed kölsch at its source in Germany. I will never forget how enjoyable this style was and is, and how you literally inhale the stuff. While Ölsch has a little ways to go before it is up to snuff with the Germans, this beer is without question, one of the best domestic examples of the style I have tasted. It has that wonderfully soft pale malt palate ,with subtle hints of fruit and some nice, gentle hop character. It was the perfect summer refresher, and I enjoyed copious amounts at OBBS.
Ölsch pours to a slightly hazy, golden color with a thick, bright, white head, and a moderate to soft amount of carbonation. The nose on this beer is very pleasing with light aromas of pale malt, and aromatic herbal hop aroma. The beer is soft on the palate with good pale malt flavor paired with subtle estery fruit flavor. Ölsch finishes with more soft malt and fruit flavors up front, then ends with a zesty but restrained herbal hop bitterness.
This is an excellent domestic version of kölsch, and while it isn’t the real thing, it is as close as you are going to get here in the US. This beer is a great beer to enjoy as an aperitif at OBBS, and would work very well with a number of the local sea food dishes on the menu. I enjoyed this one, as I did in Köln, Germany. A wonderful beer to sit back and relax with. Ölsch is a perfect summer refresher, and this beer style is just a natural on the OBX.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at the brewpub. Straw color pale yellow with a frothy white head like stiff egg whites. Faint citrus nose. This is a light beer with flavors of biscuit breadiness and lemon. Very nice beer after a hot day at the beach.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
A nice little refreshing summer Kolsch. Yellow amber in color, lighter, but not too light of body or mouthfeel which is quite pleasing for this style. White head spreading quickly. Overall a solid enjoyable offering. Draught in Kill Devil Hills.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draught at the brewpub. Golden color with thin head. A hint of hops in the nose. Nice flavor with hops, cereal, and citrus well balanced. Aftertaste is pleasant, like cereal almost. I was suprised by this beer figuring it would be the typical "light beer" brew pub offering.

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
This seemed like a potential keggar beer to me which is very drinkable but too light for me to want something other than a sampler of this. The hops and malts are there as I detected a dark shade to this "pale" beer but it could use some more carbonation to give it that effervescence this style demands.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Crystal clear and golden. Extremely crisp, clean and vaguely citrusy, but there's little malt body. It's just an OK beach beer.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pale yellow, diminishing head. Decent malt flavor, but then disappeared into a pretty floral hoppy finish. Not spectacular, but very enjoyable. Subtle.
