3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Westkyoto77 (135) - Kyoto, JAPAN - MAY 11, 2013
A deep cherry brown, fuzzy head. Hops, resin, caramel on the nose, but nothing too overpowering. Hoppy enough, but also quite mellow and drinkable. Nothing like a USA west coast IPA, but not much like any other. Nice enough, but just lacked a final knockout blow.
3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Hoppsan (18) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - MAY 4, 2013
Draft at Ushitora. Amber color, small head. Nice fresh hops in aroma, but some unfortunate clear defects in taste (metal, sour yeast).
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Theis (11070) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - APR 25, 2013
Draught at Bungalow, Kyoto. Clear amber - white head. Fruity hoppy. Nice bitterness. Resin. Cocoa. Light chocolate notes. Light mouldy. Not too bad...
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 KansaiBeerLvrs (230) - Kyoto, JAPAN - MAR 3, 2013
On tap at Bungalow, it didn’t seem to be called Bunyip just an Australia IPA so I am not sure if it is the same brew or if it has changed. The color was a nice reddish brown with a good head of foam & decent lacing. The mouth feel was nice but the hop aroma was quite mild and my overall impression was it was kind of middle of the road. It didn’t make such an impression on me. Then again I had been at an IPA tasting before drinking it so it may have suffered in comparison.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 TimE (2584) - Tokyo, JAPAN - SEP 3, 2012
deep amber color. Interesting marachino cherries, unfermented wort in the nose. Medium body, very malty, but very balanced and centered around the backbone. Moderate amount of bitterness. I would say strong pale ale rather than India pale ale.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 KyotoLefty (4725) - Kyoto, JAPAN - MAY 16, 2012
Draught at the Kyoto craft Beer Festival, 2012.
Pretty orange-brown color with lace. Big caramel nose enveloped in grassy hops. Great bitterness. Very complex as sweet, rich caramel works with (battles against) grassy, earthy hops. A trip, though a bit weird.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 maekchu (1086) - Hirakata, JAPAN - MAY 15, 2012
On tap at the Craft Beer Fest Kyoto 2012. "Bunyip" -- sort of aboriginal version of Bigfoot (the mythological creature, not the beer)Not much aroma. Cloudy yellowish, and ugly looking. Well hopped, to be sure, with a pleasant aftertaste. Some interesting flavors but not integrated. Crisp palate. A beer with potential. The ingredients seem to be there, but this version is not really ready or hasn’t blended well.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 jonno (2001) - JAPAN - MAR 29, 2012
Tap. Uses Australian grown cascade hops. Nice caramel and toffee apple nose. Very malty IPA. Lots of dark caramel and sweet marron cake with a soft though noticeable citrus hop finish. Well put together but too unbalanced for my liking with this style.
