2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sometimes, I think, it is important to focus on the social context of beer drinking. Take this one which was picked up from the fridge at a small petrol station in Gruda and very much enjoyed after an airborne trip from Oslo to Tivat and then on a minibus from the airport heading towards Dubrovnik under a burning sun, and after waiting in an endless queue for border crossing between Montenegro and Croatia. It was just what I needed at the time. First of all the content of the 330ml can was timely refreshing and thirst quenching. But this very popular Croatian pilsner had also got some satisfying taste of lemony hops supported by moderate sweetness. The ending was smooth and medium dry. Aroma of grass and hints of herbal hops. Later, during a week in Dubrovnik, I had this beer in can, bottle and from tap, but it never tasted as refreshing as that particular can just after border crossing on a warm Saturday afternoon in Gruda. My rating is based on that event and that’s why Ozujsko Pivo gets an overall score of 2.9 and not 1.9. Later I discovered that the beer had a bright, straw coloured body with a fast fading, white foamy head (23.08.2008).

UPDATED: SEP 23, 2009 Can LCBO "ozujsko svijetlo’ special pale - 5.2% - I assume re-packaging. Very typical East Eurolager - sweet, nearly odorless, though not without malt flavor and some hop bittering. Flavors are apple lemon and grass. Cleanly made. Pours a clear pale gold with an ambitious white head. Slight soapy after-feel.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
I tried this beer on July 26, 2008 after purchasing from one of my local LCBO outlets. The beer poured a translucent medium gold colour with a generous loose white head that quickly disappeared. The aroma was a nice balance of grainy malt with a little hoppish presence. The mouthfeel was light bodied, crisp, and heavily carbonated. The flavour was very grassy with not a lot of hoppiness.

2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours a golden yellow with white head, not quite as impressive as the one pictured. Aroma of grass, corn, and grains. Slightly sweet and fruity flavour with some nice hops. A winner from Croatia in my mind.

2.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours pale yellow with some white fizzy head. Neutral in aroma, a little creamy in mouthfeel.Grainy taste. Its drinkable actually, though somewhat astringent in the finish. I could drink this if I had no other beers about. Passable and serviceable for its style, as a pseudo-pilsner.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
500 ml bottle from LCBO, served cold in a tulip glass.
App.: Clear golden with a rim of white foam.
Aroma: Light apples and other fruitiness, a bit of skunky, grassy hops, cereal and grain, sort of a honey sweetness.
Palate: Medium body and carbonation.
Flav.: More grainy than the nose, still a bit of grassy hops, some fruitiness; dry but feels like it wants to be sweet somehow, nasty alcohol (fusel oils???) and stale apple juice on the finish.
Balanced, certainly not bad, but definitely lacklustre.

2.1 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pale golden pour with a weak head. Scent of corn and grains. Hate to generalize, but this has that generic Euro Pils scent. Taste at least has some distinction. Good hops taste, easy to drink. Seems watered down and there is a waxy aftertaste. Definatley not horrible, better then many other "euro pils"

2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
500 mL can. Active and yellow gold with a small white head that gradually recedes to a film. Medium aroma is quite sweet, with some corn and earthy hops. Flavour is mild, and light on the hops. I really can’t even pick out the pilsner malt. Thin body is not dry enough. Having said all of this, it’s at least drinkable, which is more than I can say for most of the other beers I’ve tried from this part of the world.
