COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As black as pitch, this Russian style Imperial Stout brings warmth to weary and frigid souls everywhere. Dark, smooth, and roasty, this is the stout of Russian Czars! Brewed to withstand the long trip to Moscow from Great Britain. Took back to back Silvers at the 92 & 93 GABF.

Had the small glass of this and really enjoyed it. Jet black and thin tan head that laced the glass beautifully. Coffee comes thru loud and clear. Reminds me of Dark Lord...not as good, but at least you can get it! The don’t always have this one on tap, but is worth it if there.

A bit better then their regular stout. Pours a super deep black with a thick tan head. Smells creamy. Taste is very smooth and creamy, with a slightly bitter finish. A bit boring. Had on tap at the brewery.

Bottle from Whole Food Market, NYC 120907. Clear amber, a bit bubbly beer with a big offwhite lacy head. Malty, hoppy, creamy caramell aroma. Malty, caramell, sweet and bitter, creamy flavour.

Draught @ Pacific Coast Brewing Company, Oakland. Rated on 19.10.2012.
Pours a pitch black colour with a beige creamy head. Aroma of roasted malts, licorice and some soy sauce. Flavour is rather smooth with roasted malts, licorice, wood, bread and some floral notes. Full bodied, oily mouthfeel and a warming smooth finish. Well balanced.

On tap. Pours with a completely opaque black body. Head is deep brown and long lasting with clingy lacing. Full retention. Aromas are rich, chocolate, some licorice, raisins, dark fruit, fudge, light smoke and vanilla. Flavors of alcohol, tobacco, iodine, smoke, dark fruits, earthy, chocolate (hershey’s sweet/artificial), fudge (real thankfully). Creamy, smooth, slightly bitter, light carbonation and heat. Body is a bit on the thin side for the style.

A: The pour is nearly black, maybe just a really dark brown color with a small tan head. S: Lots of things going on here. I get licorice, molasses, prunes (and other dark fruits), just to begin with. Also lots of roasted character and maybe a little bit of ash/burnt sugar. The nose is pretty sweet overall, though. T: The flavor is somewhat harsh at times, but compared to the other beers these guys make, this is a winner. A bitter roasted malt flavor, prunes, molasses, licorice, and certainly some alcohol. M: The body is medium with a low to moderate level of carbonation. D: Not really my favorite take on an imperial stout, but it’s a lot better than the other stuff they brew.

Draft. A black beer with a lazing orangey head. The aroma has notes of sweet and roasted malt combined with a note of alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and alcohol.

Sample at the brewpub on 8/8/10. Pours black with a big tan nitro head. Roasty and chocolatey nose, similar to a dry Irish stout instead of a RIS. Chocolate flavor with roast and a bit of booze in the finish.

My Bottom Line:
This very roasty Imperial Stout swerves into ashes and bitterness as its coffee angles and bloated nitrogen mouthfeel attempt to stabilize the taster’s reeling comfort zone.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of nitrogen-pushed foam settles atop the blackness.
-This got tiring the more I drank it.
-The chocolatey nose got lost in the finish’s ashes.
-Alcohol is concealed by that very bitter and dusty finish.

On tap at the brewpub.

On nitro tap at the brewpub pouring up with deep dark body supporting a lasting dark tan head. The aroma has notes of chocolate, malts, some black licorice, burnt malts and chocolate covered malt balls. The taste begins with a pleasing mix of black licorice, burnt malts, some dark chocolate candy bars and dark chocolate covered malt balls. The roasty to burnt malts slowly take over into the finish with lingering hints of black licorice around the edges. This has a yummy level of chocolatiness throughout. Well done!
