The Oatmeal Stout is a traditional English style stout, created before Arthur Guinness established the Dry Irish Stout style. Oatmeal Stout gets its dark profile from chocolate malt which has not been roasted as long or as strongly as the barley used in Dry Stouts. The chocolate malt gives notes of coffee or chocolate, and the oatmeal softened the background even further for smooth, easy drinking ale.

From my dear brother: Pours black with a creamy head. Some salty pretzel smell, dark chocolate malt, and a hint of coffee. Taste is lightly bitter. It is very dry, Leaves some lingering dryness and dark chocolate. Not bad.

Dark brown, almost black pour with small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, slight coffee, chocolate and hint of sweetness. Taste of roasted malts, slight coffee and chocolate, lactose. Medium carbonation, full bodied and a nice velvety mouthfeel, almost creamy. Excellent stout, definately one of their best offerings.

Pours a clear black with a frothy brown head that lasts a while. Aroma of chocolate, mocha coffee, roasted malts and faint dark fruits. Taste is chocolate, coffee, cream and the body is nice and slick from the oatmeal. Excellent oatmeal stout.

On tap at Charcut, Calgary. Decent deep brown black colour, something of a head. Wasn’t labelled as oatmeal stout and I’d never have guessed, more of a pleasant but unremarkable dry stout with roasty malt and a dry finish. Quite quaffable, but mouthfeel and smoothness of oatmeal stout not there.
