Originally reviewed Feb. 16, 2007: poured deep dark brown. aroma is not highly noticeable of the flavour it pronounces. didn't smell too much really. cap was decent, being light brown, that didn't last too long. light lacing. taste shows some roasted malts, bit of hops. tastes good. bits of coffee. good tasting brew.

Bottled sample at The Freehouse in Saskatoon. Similar to czechmate. Not as hoppy but quite flavorful. Nice coffe tone ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

pours the color of coke. Next to no head. Smells like an amazing bakery...fresh bread. Sweet malts on the palate, that are very well balanced. nice clean finish with some nice bitterness. Refreshing.

What a tasty beer. Dark colour. Sweet, which is why I like it. Prunes, dark chocolate, coffee.

Nice dark pour with a thin, quickly disappearing head. Subtle aroma with a hint of malts. Taste is sweet and malty with a hint of coffee. Leaves a nice burnt malt taste on my tongue. I feel like the aroma lets this beer down a bit, as it’s very subtle, but it’s delicious. Wish I could get this in Manitoba.

341ml bottle pours a deep amber brownish color with a finger and a half of off-white head that settles to leave some thin lacing on the glass. Aromas of toasted malts and a traces of coffee and smoke and some grassy hops. Taste is smokey with a malty sweetness a touch of coffee and a grassy hop bitterness in the finish that lingers for some time. Medium body and carbonation. This is quite a pleasing dark lager.

In short: A very hoppy (grassy/tobacco) ruby lager. Nice session beer
How: Bottle 341ml. Consumed fresh soon after purchase. Bottle sent to me by presario, thanks a lot Trevor
The look: Almost clear dark ruby body topped by a large beige head with good retention
In long: Nose has tobacco, a tiny bit of smoke, dark malts and dried fruits. Basically is smells like a cigarette butt over a slice of raisin pie. Taste has toasted bready malts (dry bread crumbs), a underlying dustiness (yeast?) and a lot of dry grassy hops with a character that is somewhat dry spicy grassy noble hops (saaz-ish) and tobacco. Finish is quite dry with a grassy bitterness and light spiciness. Body is a bit fluffy. This Black Cat is actually a pretty good beer. And I’m not afraid of black cats, nothing bad is gonna happen to me if I see a black cat, this is just superstitious rubbish... (knock on wood)

Lighter brown color, thin head. This beer has a spicy carbonation that jumps out at you with the first sip. Smokey with a very light mouthfeel.

On tap at St. Augustine’s, pours dark brown with a reddish hue. Roasty tones on the nose and flavour, with light coffee notes and medium balance of hops. Decent.
