GoufCustom (908) - HONG KONG - JAN 3, 2015

330 ml bottle bought at MyMug’s booth at HKCEC in Wan Chai during The 12th Hong Kong Food Festival.

Translucent blackish brown colour with scattering yeast particles; Three-quarter finger head with beige foam which lasts for 1 minute; Excellent sticky lacing and zero carbonation; Quite fragrant aroma of dark malt, with strong caramel, toffee, light black coffee, full cream, sugar, light dark fruits, very light metallic, srong yeast, very light lemon and faint grass; Close to light sweet taste of dark malt, with pretty strong tartness, moderate metallic, caramel, burnt toffee, very light black coffee, light cream, molasses notes, yeast, light lime, light bitter hops and thin grass; Medium body. Creamy palate; Mouth feel is rich dark malt with slight roasty taste. Strong tartness and metallic to the tongue. Creamy and strongly caramel backbone. Sweetness is very light, typical to many average Bruins. Good burnt toffee and some light coffee aside, there’s not much varieties. Quite comfy though, okay… Hoppiness is light lemon in nose, lime and thin grass in taste. Bitterness is light and not outstanding, for mostly a malty, creamy low bitter finish; Fairly dry after taste. Creamy and light bitter to mouth.

Comments: Based on the tried-and-tested Bruin / Dubbel base, this one has very good maltyness and creamy body, nice caramel and toffee aroma and taste. Hoppinesss are disappointing (where are the Saaz and Magnum?) but pretty much expected for a typical Dubbel. Better than average.

Relatively simple brown ale; little foam and only a slight aroma, bitter taste and aftertaste. Enjoyable but not special.

Good dirty-cream head, dense & rather stable over dark chestnut coloured beer, opaque if clear. Warm, coloured malts, touch herbal, hints of cypress. Dark bread, breadcrust (some Maillard?), sweetish but yet dry; leafy, herbal. Caramel prominent, dark candi sugar, yeasty touch. Finish is a bit metallic (iron?). Medium bodied, rather slick; well-carbonated feel. More than decent. Walloon brown ale rather than Flemish, IMHO.
