COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
PALM Ale has long been one of Europe’s top-selling specialty beers. Made with English hops, French Barley, and Belgian yeast, PALM represents the best of European beer-making traditions. It’s the roasted Champagne Malt which gives PALM its amber color, but without being heavy. Also available bottle-conditioned as Palm Hergist.
Sold as Palm outside of Europe.

on tap at the Iron Horse, Westwood NJ. Deep golden colored body, lightly amber at the center. Not much head, thin & foamy light tan. Aroma is honey, corn malt, also husky and grassy. A little citrusy too. Flavor is dry and grassy malt, yeasty and grainy, a little tangy and citrusy. Crisp carbonation. Haven’t had this since 1991 and my friends thought it was skunked back then. They just didn’t know what it was supposed to taste like.

Along with De Koninck, this is the classic ’spéciale belge’, a style which has lost much of its popularity in the last decade - prompting the Flemish government to classify it as something which needs protection. Back in the nineties, before I started venturing into specialty beers, this was my favorite session beer. I’ve tasted it hundreds of times from bottles and from tap, but for this rating I bought a 33 cl can. Pours a warm orange blond colour with somewhat yellowish hue, clear with little fizz, under a thinnish but dense and stable, off-white head. Weakish and sweetish aroma of caramel, pasteurization and clear DMS (cooked cauliflower), iron, pear, rotten peaches, hints of banana, apple peel and hazelnuts. Taste begins with a restrained, sweetish fruitiness of vague apple, apricot and orange, minerally and slightly sourish carbonation, caramelly and nutty but superficial maltiness in the middle, slick and rather thin mouthfeel, metallic too, finish mildly grassy hop bitterish but mostly consisting of lingering malt sweetishness. Thirst-quenching and preferable over Jupiler and the like, but on the thin and bland side, more straightforward than it could have been and partially ruined by quite off-putting odours. I remember the tap version as being a bit more ’pure’ and malty, but I cannot exclude the possibility that this is my own imagination playing tricks with me. Classic alright, but not very interesting for those seeking the big, complex Belgian ales.

From bottle. Amber in colour. Small head. Faint hops and malt aroma. Perfectably drinkable but expected more.

0,25L bottle. Pours clear deep amber with off-white head. The head doesn’t stay. Aroma is sweet, grainy, malty, and somewhat soapy. Flavor is sweet, grainy, malty, caramel, some corn. Finish has very mild bitter note. Carbonation is high. Overall: nothing interesting, feels somewhat like lager. It is very easy to drink, so extra points for that.

250ml bottle served in its own tulip glass. A: Pours a dark orange to amber color. Clear. Forms a medium bubbled white head with medium to low retentions and some lacings formed and left S: Sweet caramel and malts in upfront. Very grainy. Notes of corn. Followed by bready yeasts and flowery hops. Hops are a bit citrus reminding a British Bitter somehow. Very light notes of sourness in the end and a bit metallic too T: Slightly sweet upfront. Again, very grainy in the mouth with a light sourness in the background. Interesting. Corn. Toffee. The hops are quite citrus giving it an air of a British Bitter. By the way, bitterness is quite light too. In overall, a quite balanced taste M: Light to medium body. Slightly molasses. Medium carbonation and grainy/toffee aftertaste O: Easy-drinking. Smooth and pleasant. Nothing special but, at the same time, an "above the average" Belgian session Ale. Recommended [ BA Review @ 11/24/2012 ]

Zarkam (447) - Helsinki, FINLAND - OCT 11, 2014
250ml bottle, 5.2% abv. Clear amber colour, small mostly vanishing fizzy white head, good lacing. Moderately malty aroma of hay and grain with a bit of toast, light to moderate earthy hops and a bit of fruitiness. Taste is initally fairly neutral mildly bittersweet with a short bitter finish with an astringent feel. Light to medium body, slick mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Not very remarkable, kind of like a lager with a bit more taste.

A nice amber colour with a slight caramel hint on the nose. Taste falls a little flat after the great start; it seems somewhat muted.
