The Royal Standard, Lyme Regis. Cask. Clear amber beerm small bubbly pale cream colour head. Palate is light with modest fine carbonation. Smooth malts, little unsweet toffee. Mild floral bitterness. Tangy dried fruits and a trace of orange peel. Finishes light and semi dry. It’s a bitter and it doesn’t offend.

Cask at the New Inn, Cerne Abbas, 25/10/15. Clear copper with a well appointed light beige covering that retains well. Nose is caramel, light orchard fruit, floral notes. Taste comprises toffee, light vanilla, earthy, biscuit malt. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, semi drying close with light bitterness. Ok bitter.

Cask at the Earl of Normanton, as Palmers IPA. Brown pour with a lightly fruity nose. Bittersweet palate with nutty malt and a hint of woodiness. Really good example of the style.

part of my 2013 backlog, and drunk in the new Inn Cerne Abbas, Dorset. Amber colour with a white head. Aroma has fruit and nut and caramel, the taste has this too. very easy to drink.

Cask at a random pub in Dorset. It pours deep copper with a medium white head. The nose is wood, leather, varnish and twig. The taste is bitter, earthy, wood, leather, light spice, varnish, chewy malt and a touch of alcohol with a dry finish. Medium body, soft carbonation and chewy mouth-feel. Fairly standard best bitter. OK.

Cask at Lamb and Flag. Pours clear amber with a medium, creamy off-white head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is toast and biscuit malt, earthy hops and pear esters. Flavor is malt and hop balanced with a lean to the bitterness, and a dry finish. Light body and medium carbonation.

A mid amber orange coloured beer with a weak white head. A light malty aroma, slightly woody and a little spicy. Dry mouthfeel. A dry malty taste, biscuity, tiny hint of spice and wood. The finish is dry and malty.

Hand-pulled half-pint in The Lamb & Flag, Oxford on 23 Nov 13. Light amber body, bright and clan, on top an off-white coating of tight bubbles. No huge aroma, some hints of fruit and nuts, maybe a hop smell here and there, but overall not much. The taste was of a typical UK session Bitter: malts win the flavour battle over the hops, but only just with the hops giving a good dry and bitter base for the malts to show their medium sweetness. Well balanced and easy to drink: this isn’t going to test your senses too greatly but it is a fine example of a UK Bitter.
