Strong, complex and full of deep distinctive flavours. A rich fruit cake flavour from roasted malt. First brewed in the 1940s, this prize-winning dark strong old ale has a loyal following among real ale connoisseurs.

Cask (PBBF2012, Wed)
A touch of cocoa in the aroma, otherwise a classic strong English ale. Dark reddy brown, small head. Soft palate, carbonation low. Caramelly. Not so exciting, but very tasty. Full, sweetish, but very mellow. A tasty strong ale.

Bottled. Very dark red/brown, with a head of small, light brown bubbles that disappeared quickly. Surprisingly little aroma. Rich caramel to start (though not at all sweet), and a dry/bitter finish. Good.

Tried this one back in August 2011.
Produces up a fiery mahogany with a full and lasting, creamy off-white cap. Robust, malty, Milo and Ovaltine nose with inklings of smoke, burnt sugar, dried stonefruit and roasted grain. Sweet, toffee praline and chocolate malt start in the mouth; a touch of ginger and aniseed gives it a pleasant sharpness becoming earthy and mellowed in the tail. Very soft tannins show in the malty thick, milk chocolate swallow. Sweetens further as it warms. the body seems quite firm, rounded and generous with mild carbonation. Goes down with ease but is a little too sweet for balance. Still, not too bad!! (50cL, 22/02/12, Dart’s Farm, Topsham, Exeter, Devon)

First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in August 1992. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear ruby red in colour with a thin white head. Nice malty aroma with mild butterscotch notes present. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Dark malts give a moist maltloaf base with raisins and dates sweet in the mouth. Slight earthy flavour to the bitter aftertaste but this fades fast. Finish is sweet and malty with dry roasted nut flavours coming through in the palate. A decent English Strong Ale and reminded me of a strong version of Timothy Taylor Ram Tam! Very hard to find up here in Scotland and not as good as the Adnams namesake!
