Iím a sucker for coffee beers. This is a coffee beer, so it therefore stands to reason that I am a sucker for this beer. Lots of coffee character, as might be expected. Very enjoyable beer. Sampled at 2010 pre-Brewerís Jam tasting.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with orange edges and a small khaki head. The aroma is strong espresso with a nice, deep roastiness, hints of molasses and beef, and a little bit of an earthy tone. The flavor is delicious fresh espresso. Iím impressed with how well the coffee element in this is done; strong, but clean. There are also notes of molasses and caramel in the background, behind some smoky char, leather, and earth. There are faint hops in the finish. Pretty good stuff.

6 pack from Piggly Wiggly St. Johnís Island. Looks like a porter sure enough. The aroma gets me hopeful with its genuine, deep coffee character. Itís not as sharp as typical espresso, but a little earthier like Asian coffee. The palate is a little thinner than I expected, but not too bad. The sharpness I expect from espresso is more detected after a sip. It grinds my gears when coffee stouts or porters are too weak or unnatural. This one gets the right idea. Even though tasty coffee is the main attraction, there is still detectable malt quality which reminds me that its beer. This is a really solid offering from Palmetto. Big props. Wish I could buy 6 packs of this back home in the winter.

Bottle at Hymanís Seafood in Charleston, SC. Pours dark brown with brown and ruby highlights - very much like coffee. Almost no head (thin at first but short-lived). Aroma is very strong with rich coffee and a hint of caramel sweetness. Flavor is robust coffee with a touch of dry cocoa and bittersweet malts. Light earthy hops in finish and growing sweetness with more chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel is full - almost syrupy - with moderate carbonation. Overall, not bad - but a little mediocre...
