COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Cool Beanz Coffee Porter is a easy drinking porter with a balanced yet notably coffee focused beer. We brew this beer with our local Coffee Roaster Philz Coffee. The Philz roast we use, Philtered Soul, is roasted with hazelnuts and lends a nice nutty roundness to the beer

Sampled on tap at Rangoon Burmese in San Carlos. A nice roasted brew that was easy on the palate but lots of flavor. Well put together and crisp.

Bomber from Janeís Beer Store. Nose is tons of roasted coffee, light chocolate, and the hazelnuts come through moderately well. Clear very dark brown with a one finger, heavy lacing, long lasting tan head. Flavor is bitter dark roasty coffee, hints of cocoa, and a moderate nuttiness. Actually very good!

This beer was brewed at Hermitage, and I think bottles (22 oz) showed up in early December for ~$6. It pours a dark, slightly reddish brown, about the color of black coffee thatís a bit too weak. I can see through it, and there doesnít appear to be any haze. The small beige head dissipates fairly quickly and leaves little behind. The aroma kicks off with a strong shot of coffee. It uses coffee from a local chain called Philz, and this particular blend (Philtered Soul) uses some hazelnuts, which actually manage to come through a bit and contribute a well-integrated nutty sweetness. Iím not normally a huge fan of Philz, but the coffee notes in the beer are quite good. Thereís some cocoa sweetness, caramel and cola flavor also playing a role. A bit of roast. Itís just a very well put together porter aroma with a strong but flavorful coffee note. The taste is well-balanced. Starts off with moderate sweetness, which fades into more acidic, bitter territory as the roast and coffee assert themselves. The finish is mostly coffee with a bit of cola. Mouthfeel tries to be creamy but doesnít quite get far enough. Itís good but tends toward watery territory. Iím not normally a big coffee beer person, but this one has won me over, mostly by way of its excellent coffee flavor - kinda odd since Iím also not big on hazelnuts and thatís one of my favorite parts of this beer. Iím happy to see Hermitage improving, particularly since theyíve been taking on so much of the local contract brewing, and theyíve made another very good beer for Palo Alto. Good stuff.
