If there were ever a beer that so quintessentially captures the spirit of the primordial past on planet Earth, it has to be the Hop Nest Monster. Bursting with the aroma of the American Amarillo hop, like the eruption of a great and tempestuous volcano, the Monster makes a bold and intimidating impression even before it reaches the palate. As an all-malt American IPA, over an entire pound per barrel of fragrant and floral Amarillo hops are added to the brew kettle during the final minutes of the boil. This process is known as late-kettle hopping.

From memory. Biscuit malt and floral/citrus hops in the aroma and taste. Some bitterness, but not very exiting at all.

Bottle. Lactic orange malt and orange peel aroma. Golden yellow with large white head. Sweet orange malt and moderately bitter lemon peel flavor. Good body.

bottle @ Jungle Jim’s / Eastgate OH --- The question shouldn’t be: "Does it have enough hop aroma or taste?", but is it appealing on its own merits, regardless of name. This brew has an aroma of malt and burlap that awakens my appetite (but....no hops). Clear golden amber color, a long-lasting foamy white head, sheets of lace. Taste is malt, primarily, with some floral hops and carbonation on the swallow. Had the brewer claimed 22IBU’s rather than 77IBU’s, this would probably have a better reception. As a straight amber ale, it works nicely.

Malt bomb with this beer. Not hoppy, piney or citruscy. Very carbonated and has a strong nose of malt. Blah.

Love the golden color but the head disappears quickly. Grainy aroma with very little citrus. Taste is a little bit better than anticipated.

Bottle. Clear, golden body. Frothy white head, slowly diminishing. Aroma of citrus, floral hops, toasted grain. Hint of caramel, bread. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, moderate carbonation. Malt forward with flavors of caramel, bread, raw grain. Hops shouldn’t play second fiddle to malts in an IPA.

Light floral nose, great carbonation, great lacing. Mouthfeel is slightly thin. There is enough malt to stand up to the hop. There is a long bitter finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

New Beer Distributors, NYC 12oz ($2): Pours orange with a white head. Aroma is light citrus some pale malts, flowers. Taste is underwhelming to say that least. Hops are there, but they are subdued, with perhaps too few put in there. It isn’t terrible, but it is sort of boring.

Rated on 12-11-2010. When this bottled beer is poured, it has a large white head that mostly diminishes, hazy golden body, slow rising carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma is caramel malt, citrus and orange hops. The taste is moderately sweet, lightly bitter, caramel malt, citrus hops, and has a short dry finish. The mouth feel is soft carbonation and this beer is medium bodied. Overall, this beer is not overly hoppy tasting for the style which is nice for this non hop head! It is easy to drink, but there are much, much better beers of this style to be had.

Tgis beer is underrated. The taste is great - especially for folks like me that prefer a slightly bitter aftertaste. Very delicious.

Poured from a bottle. Light gold, fairly carbonated, with a moderate to mild head. Aroma of yeast and fruits with hints of apricot. There’s a good malt backbone with just a hint of malty fruitcake followed by a tart grapefruit-like finish. Not bad. Not great. It’s in between my sweet spots of heavy citrus (All Day IPA) and heavy hops (Resin, etc.).
