Note: this is the same recipe as Barriquée Sour, but it doesn’t get infected with lactobacillus bacteria and aged in sterilized barrels.
Originally it was the only version available outside of North America; then followed by the Barriquée Sour European version (that is not produced anymore); nowadays also the Barriquée Sour is available in Europe.

Benzai (14282) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - MAY 21, 2015
Bottle shared by Erwin Van Moll @ Brewpub Van Moll during the brewing of Benzai’s 10k beer. Hazy brown to dark amber color, huge soapy foamy off-white head. Aroma is lightly malts, red fruits, strawberry, grape, grape peel. Tastes about the same: lightly malts, wood, grape, grape peel, lightly sourish, fruitpeel sour, lightly dry. Interesting beer.

Best before February 23rd, 2012 so not so fresh and presumably well-aged. Pours a clear ruby with a small bubbly white head that slowly fades and leaves good lacing. Nose is gently acetic and fruity. Taste is moderately tart and offers some apples dipped in balsamic vinegar. Wood goes pretty much unnoticed but I’m sure it is because of its advanced age. Nicely drinkable with no rough edges. Body is light to medium, carbonation low and mouthfeel just vinous. Overall a nice one, I can report that it held really well!

Clear ruby thin white head. Soft acid, Horseradish, oxidation, old fruit. Medium, soft acid, tart and full of old fruit. Ok but not great.

I’m a much bigger fan of the sour versions, but this an at least average BSA. Fruity on the nose with some zest from the yeast and a layer or two of malt. As per the style, little to no hops to be found.

750 ml bottle. L6. Bottled on F/12. From Italy. Courtesy of Brandman. HHOK XVI.
I guess this one’s the Mild as there’s no Sour sticker. I could be wrong. Reddish brown colour with a small grey head. Sourness, berries, quite strong darkness and malt in the aroma. Sourness, berries, dark fruits and malt in the flavour.
