Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

Batch #8 2007, bottle 1091. Pours a hazy amber-hued brown with a beige head that fades to a solid cap, leaving spotty lacing. The head is layered, with beige bubbles below and white froth on top. The nose is horseblanket, vinegar, tart cherries, lactic acid, wet wood and cheesy cider. The inital flavour is bright, sour fruits, dust and earthy hops, then finishing with balsamic vinegar, musty cheese, oak and vanilla. This is an insanely complex and balanced sour ale. The palate is silken with gentle carbonation and a chewy body. There are some metallic notes of iron, but it for some odd reason seems to complement the beer.

Bottle shared at Dark Lord Day 08. Pours a light red wine color with a white head. Smells like a sour and has a sour taste that is not over the top like some other sours I have tried. A solid brew.

Bottle shared while sitting in the hottub looking at little Cottonwood Canyon, I guess bath water would probably taste great staring at this! Pours hazy mahogony color with a smallish ring of light tan colored head. Aroma is oak, earthy, acetic, balsamic. Flavor is oak, vanilla, earth, balsamic, tart cherries, dark fruits. Palate is medium to light bodied, medium carbonation, finished tart/sour. Delicious, can;t believe it has taken this long for me to try one. it will be a staple now!!

2006 bottle. Not wholly what I expected. More wood shone through (duh) and mellow, not at all lip-puckering but purely Flemish sour as gorgeous and refined as Rodenbach Alex. Gets better by the sip and is a must for sour but also barrel-aged freaks.

I can’t believe after 700 ratings, I don’t have one for Italy....until now. hapjydeuce beat me to the punch again, bringing this gem, soon after I got one. I hope it ages well. I’ll keep my around for a while. Thanks Justin! 2007 vintage. Red amber color. Sourness is mild. Some lactic aroma. Malty caramelization. Easy to drink. Best with cheese or dinner.

Bottled, shared with wetherel and Sean at the PP Bottle Shop. An Italian oak-aged sour, this is a first. Light mahogany color, some initial white bubbles; the aroma is definitely pushed to the acetic, balsamic side with some oak-aging noticeable, but nothing spectacularly prominent. Really similar to Duchesse I thought. Medium sourness in the flavor, with notes of toasted biscuit, lemon and earth. Very dry finish and a good amount of carbonation. Props to Italy for this; and for pizza.....glorious, glorious pizza.
