KnutAlbert (3111), Oslo, Norway Jun 18, 2007 0,75 l bottle form the brewery, 2007 vintage.
This is one of three version of the same beer, and this is the sourest. As I type this a week after the tasting, the wonderful aroma gets back to me.
It is amazing how the brewer has amanged to combine an almost vinegary sourness with a smooth and mellow beer. It balances ann extreme beer with an extremely likeable one! Lively carbonation.
There is some fruitiness in this, sour cherries come to mind. JMFG (1514), Florida, USA Jun 16, 2007 2005. Pours a clear copper-orange color with a thick white head. Tart and acidic on the nose, but a bit less aggressive than other Flemish Sours. Nice oak, apple, sour grape aromas come out as well. Taste is sour, but it isn’t an acidic gauntlet on the palate. This actually compliments the overall taste, as the slight tannic notes come out more towards the finish. Some cider-like qualities in the taste as well. A great beer. drewbeerme (2223), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 10, 2007 750ml, 2005 vintage. pours dull amber with white head. nose has nice sour cherries, oak, sour and funky, but becomes a little anti-septic. flavor is rustic, oakys, cherry, slight anti-septic, slight sourness with good amount of acidity. a nice winey, acidic, and dry finish. i’ve had this twice and the first time i compared it side by side la folie which blew it away, and i’m sure supplication would do the same. yes it’s very tasty, but when compared to those greats it falls short in all areas. perhaps it could be a 4+ with more fruit and less medicinal notes, until then, i’ll have to get re-rating this thing. Viper666 (614), Greenfield Park, Quebec, Canada May 29, 2007 Bouteille 2005, courtoisie de Hogtownharry. RCL (1444), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA May 26, 2007 The aroma is the craziest, most funky awesome thing ever. Like vanilla and sour fruit preserves. Taste is not quite as amazing, but pleasant and well integrated. DMRz (218), Durham, North Carolina, USA May 26, 2007 Aromas of barnyard and sour cherries. Flavors are much the same, although there is a good deal of sweetness that I was not expecting. This beer really is not my favorite style, although I can appreciate its complexity... jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA May 15, 2007 From a capped olive green 750 ml. bottle with a blurb on the back label, bottled in 2005, stored at cellar temperature and allowed to warm up a bit before sampling in a flute glass.
Poured a clear reddish orange hued copper with a frothy, foamy beige head, good retention, fair amount of laced sticking.
Aromas of tart, earthy, musty yeast and wood, some sweet berry fruitiness, lightly tannic, and herbal vinegary alcohol.
Good tiny bubbly carbonation and a crisp, dry, creamy, sipping smooth medium-light bodied mouthfeel.
Tastes of earthy, musty, spicy yeast, oak woody, sour cherries and sweet raspberries, a mild acidity one would associate with vinegar, a sour lactic vanilla that I associate with wood barrels, sharp alcohol bite, and dry yeasty, malty finish.
I thought this was light on tartness and sourness, it was an easy sipper, pleasant on a mild spring day.
pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA May 9, 2007 2006 bottle. Dark brownish red with a very thin loose bubbled reddish tan head. Earthy oaky aromas predominate with some vinous hints, herbal notes, definite lactobacillis. Dusty? Maybe some barnyard? A thin body, with low carbonation and perhaps just a touch of chalkiness, though not offensive in mouthfeel. The flavor is a bit gentler in the mouth than in the nose. Oaky, woody, maybe some copper. Earthy, more vinous and grapey than in the nose. Big tannins again, going towards the grape end of the wine spectrum. Perhaps a bit of a chalky taste even, though it might be psychosomatic. The lactobacillis character is a little more subtle. Sweet drinkable and a bit of dry fruit, more like Rodenbach Grand Cru than the smell suggested. Dry lactic acid finish, long woody aftertaste. For less cash, I’d buy more.
