Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

NorCal tasting Feb 07 - To say I was bummed would be an understatement. The bottle I got was corked thru and thru. Cork in the nose, cork in the taste. It basically obliterated what otherwise was looking to be a nice beer. Aroma was..well...cork. Beneath the cork there was some light berries struggling to get out, but the cork wouldn’t have any of it. Appearance was reddish/brown in color and a nice head to it. Mouthfeel was acidic and tart. Flavors were, again, corked with a oaky/berry/vinegar angle lying underneath. Once I land another bottle of this and if it too isn’t corked, I will nuke this and re-rate. But for now, this is it.

Bottled in 2005, sampled with Beerded one. Pours Depp amber with a fricken huge four finger thick fluffy off-white head. Aroma of wood, fruit, musty, and a tart backing. The flavor is wood, and mustiness up front, followed by sweet fruitiness, and then finishes with a tart, acidic, ciitrusy finish. I never really appreciated this style, but this is a definite winner!

750mL bottle, 2006 vintage. Murky light brown-red with a large rocky off-white head. Blast of citric cherryskin, with musty tannins and a sharp phenol tinge in the aroma. Slight turning fruit sweetness up front, followed quickly by a ruddy earthen wood character. Very soft acetic tartness manifests, with some dark alefruit. Phenol wisps in the finish, residual tartness and a building astringency. Mouthfeel is a medium light, rather dry.

Bottle:Thick, murky almost maroon appearance with a wonderful aroma of alcohol, wet wood, cottage cheese, and fermenting cherries. Crisp fruity tastes with a woody aftertaste like most FSA, but a little more blunt. Delicious! Thanks Indiana Red!

750ml Bottle 2005 pours a cloudy/murky redish brown. Not head or lacing. Aroma is sour of course, lots of plums, raisons, applesand sweet wood notes. Flavor is not as tart as the aroma suggested. Sweet woody, dark pitted fruits. Cherries and apples. Trailer is a bit metallic, with a slight burn on the back end. Of the Flemish Sours I have had, this was the least tart, but possibly the most flavorfull. Very soft carbonation. Tasty but not quite up to my expectations. Thanks to whomever traded this to me last year.

Bottle: A murky, plum color with virtually no head. Lots of fruity notes with wine and a seemingly sweet quality. Taste is fruity and sweet/tart with a sour trailer. A bit acidic and dry finish. My first flemish sour ale... and a real treat. Thanks Ken.

The aroma was tart with a strong oak presence and a lightly enteric nature. The aroma was certainly lactic but had a bready character which might hint at a Brett culture. The aroma was fruity and complex with a hint of caramel. The beer poured clear dark brown with hardly any head at all, so nothing remained to lace the glass. The flavor was very mild by comparison to the last time I had tasted a bottle. The tartness was restrained and the tannic oak character was restrained as well. The flavor was only lightly acidic and had some estery fruit but while complex, missing some of the expected tartness. The body was medium and since devoid of carbonation this bottle really didn’t affect the palate. Overall a nice subdued Flanders Red, but this bottle had some room to improve by comparison to other bottles I have tried. 750 ml capped bottle, bottled in 2005.
