Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

Vinegar predominates the nose...and some tart fruitiness as well. Flavor was also vinegar, sour cherry, yeast, cognac, oak, and alcohol. Very interesting brew. As a beer lover here in the States, I found myself all a-titter over this sour, wood-aged ale!

Bottle at The Map Room. Sour ales are not my thing but this is one of the better sours I have had. Pours a rich medium amber with a thin head. Sour and tart berries dominate with wood and vanilla accents in the background. Not overly sweet and finishes crisp.

Very strange drink. Bottled in 05. Aroma is much vinegar and oak. Ugly beer, no head, and a reddish brown color. Flavor is vinegar, yeast, sour fruit. Different and very enjoyable.

LCRBM: Dark brown with a tan head. Easy drinking yet still quite tart. Nice berries, cherries and oak flavours. Some vinegar notes come through, but not in a bad way. Really refreshing stuff.

This reminded me of drinking some of the finer aged Burgundian wines. This pours a brilliant ruby red, with brown highlights, and a head that if you blink you will miss it. Sour fruits notes, but not overpowering. Lots of wood and vinous vinegar, but the finer balsamic type. Intense on the mouthfeel, amazing complexity. This is definitely a sipper, a thinking beer, that you can just enjoy over the course of an evening, much like a bottle of wine.

2005 bottle thanks to hey_kevin for this one. pours a very deep ruby red with a thin ring of white bubbles. aroma is sour but not as strong as i would have thought. there is also some malt and just a hint of oak. taste is sour sweet and dry. there seems to be just a hint toward some kind of fruit. mouthfeel is syrupy and eventually dry. damn fine brew. thanks kevin!

25.4 oz bottle 2005. Very interesting. Reddish brown body with almost no head. Aroma of yeast, wheat, wine, some fruit, maybe lemons and apricots. Flavor is very vinous. I tasted vinegar and white wine, quite tasty. Seems almost more like wine than beer.

750 mL bottle, 2005 vintage. Pours a bright ruby red with a creamy off-white head that fades to nothing within a minute. Moderate visible carbonation and lots of fine sediment in the bottle. Lightly sour aroma with a marriage of fruity essences, especially sour cherry, and a barrel aged oakiness. Dry and dusty with a little hint of Brett. Flavor has just the right amount of sourness and acidity for me. Very vinous and multi-faceted. Lots of sour cherry, cherry pits, and plums. Finish is crisp and very refreshing. Rather surprised to see that this is 8% ABV as I have a hard time even picking up the alcohol. Fairly light bodied and thin with low but lively carbonation that dances across the tongue and refreshes the palate for each consecutive sip. A really great beer in my book. Refreshing, with enough complexity to make it worthy of a two hour session from one bottle. Each sip just encouraged another and another till the end.
