kook (2034), Perth, Western Australia, Australia Feb 24, 2006 LCRBM: Dark brown with a tan head. Easy drinking yet still quite tart. Nice berries, cherries and oak flavours. Some vinegar notes come through, but not in a bad way. Really refreshing stuff. harlequinn (2745), Tacoma, Washington, USA Feb 20, 2006 This reminded me of drinking some of the finer aged Burgundian wines. This pours a brilliant ruby red, with brown highlights, and a head that if you blink you will miss it. Sour fruits notes, but not overpowering. Lots of wood and vinous vinegar, but the finer balsamic type. Intense on the mouthfeel, amazing complexity. This is definitely a sipper, a thinking beer, that you can just enjoy over the course of an evening, much like a bottle of wine. kms399 (267), plymouth, Minnesota, USA Feb 17, 2006 2005 bottle thanks to hey kevin for this one. pours a very deep ruby red with a thin ring of white bubbles. aroma is sour but not as strong as i would have thought. there is also some malt and just a hint of oak. taste is sour sweet and dry. there seems to be just a hint toward some kind of fruit. mouthfeel is syrupy and eventually dry. damn fine brew. thanks kevin! drainey (231), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 16, 2006 25.4 oz bottle 2005. Very interesting. Reddish brown body with almost no head. Aroma of yeast, wheat, wine, some fruit, maybe lemons and apricots. Flavor is very vinous. I tasted vinegar and white wine, quite tasty. Seems almost more like wine than beer. kramer (2407), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 9, 2006 750 mL bottle, 2005 vintage. Pours a bright ruby red with a creamy off-white head that fades to nothing within a minute. Moderate visible carbonation and lots of fine sediment in the bottle. Lightly sour aroma with a marriage of fruity essences, especially sour cherry, and a barrel aged oakiness. Dry and dusty with a little hint of Brett. Flavor has just the right amount of sourness and acidity for me. Very vinous and multi-faceted. Lots of sour cherry, cherry pits, and plums. Finish is crisp and very refreshing. Rather surprised to see that this is 8% ABV as I have a hard time even picking up the alcohol. Fairly light bodied and thin with low but lively carbonation that dances across the tongue and refreshes the palate for each consecutive sip. A really great beer in my book. Refreshing, with enough complexity to make it worthy of a two hour session from one bottle. Each sip just encouraged another and another till the end. NYHarvey (2154), New York, New York, USA Feb 5, 2006 Aroma is vinegar, sour cherries and tart fruits. Reddish brown in color with thumb thick tan head. Fore is quite sour and musty and is followed quickly by tart cherries and unripe apple, strong notes of those baby corns, used in Oriental cooking, stewed in cooking wine. Wood notes pop out in the middle along with musty barnyard notes. Finish is sour and dry and leaves the tongue feeling cleansed. I personally feel this would have benefited by a little more sweetness beneath the sour notes as it hints at it and that promise is enticing, but undelivered. Sammy (3934), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Feb 4, 2006 This is a masterpiece and one of the best sour beers as I am ranking to style. The reddish colour is awesome. The aroma is alcoholic is best I can say. It is very easy drinking, not thick which I liked and is dangerously easy to finish. It is complex with cognac, woody, avnilla, sour cherry. Because of the sourness this is not for everybody.
badgerben (3587), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Feb 4, 2006 MN Winter Get Together, 2005: Mucho props to Hellomynameis who brought this to the party! Brown color with no head. Good sour malt aroma with a little cherry. Big malt body with an odd addition of wheat in there. Sourness is there with just a bit of cherry, as well as a good rounding out of oak. A little honey on the finish. I’m getting addicted to this style.
