Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

Bottle obtained in a trade with Captain Cougar and shared with Greg, Harry, blankboy, Dave, and R. Muddy brown, hardly any head. Nice sour aroma, barnyard like, yeasty. Wonderful sour taste. Again barnyard, yeast, some hints of spice. Somewhat tart, but quite mild and ridiculously drinkable for the style. Grape, sour, lovely stuff, this may be the best sour I have ever tasted. A sipped on this one long after the others moved on to the next beer. The hit of the tasting.

75cl bottle...2005, 2nd batch to US...Funky bottlecap...opens somewhat like a wine vac-u-sav cork. Pours w/ some fizz & a slight brownish head that is blotchy...deep zinfandel-type red color to the beer. Heck of an aroma! Oak, nougat, mustiness, chocolate & coconut (why is this sounding like a candy bar?) Evolves into earthy berries (elderberries, maybe a couple cherries) & leather. Quite complex & wonderful. I guess I should drink it though. Light bodied & tart. Earth, leather, oak and a pronounced tartness reminiscent of raspberries & strawberries in its acidity. The flavor has very little trace of the candy bar save a touch of chocolate. The oak is not overdone, just present & pronounced...refined. Carbonation is very light, but it does add a bit of a spark to the beer...vinuous in its drinking...this beer should be served like a quality red wine & enjoyed the same way...Room temp(my room temp today is 64*F), sipping slowly. It seems that it opens up as it breathes, becoming a bit beefier in body perhaps & the acidity becomes better integrated. A great beer to spend some time w/ on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I’ve gone through 6 bottles of this in the last 30 days...every time I enjoy it a bit more. I had wanted to make carbonnade w/ it...but I think I’ll save the Goudenband for that and savor this stuff.

Big thanks for sharing Kevin! Murky brown liquid sits under a thin, ring of off white foam. Pungent sour grapes, salty brine, woody, and other sour fruits. Tart as all get out, vinious, and sour fruit fill the mouth. Great tart aftertaste, smooth and silky for the style, with some puckering afterwards. This beats out any FSAs I’ve had hands down. It’s really very good. THanks so much Kevin!

Bottle (750ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, tupalev, Dave B and R - courtesy of tupalev - big thanks for sharing this one!. This is a difficult rating - I am still building my palate for Flemish sours - but this was the hit of the tasting and I really liked it. Poured murky, muddy brown with a small foamy off-white head - just as it should be. Had a sour, funky aroma of malt vinegar, yeast, cheese, rubber - sour but not a nasal assault either - balanced. Taste is also sour, but milder and more balanced than some Flemish sours - a smooth, funky blend of red wine vinegar and yeasty tart fruit juices. Mouthfeel was acidic and fairly flat - very nice, smooth and easy to drink - could drink a whole one, which is saying a lot.

My notes are spare but my numbers seem correct so I’ll be brief: Deep brown/caramel with a chalky-brown essence. Aroma and flavor are oaken & sour without offence... pleasantly tart.

750 ml bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown color with a thick beige head. Aroma is very sour, almost vinegar like, with hints of misty dark rotting wood, cherries and wine. Taste is all SOUR. At first sip, it feels like vinegar. After the flavor sets in the taste buds, hints of cherries and other musky fruits can be detected. Not a fan of these sour ales, as they are more wine like to me than beer.

Bottle courtesy of Degarth
Medium sized, fizzy tan head that retreats rather quickly, lacing is seriously minimal. Good clarity, deep garnet red hued ale. Nose of sour crabapples, cherries, lightly dusty. Light bodied, sorta thin, puckering and very tart. Fruity, sour and fairly acidic. Muddled flavors, vinegary, strange fruitiness. Lost in its own sourness. Somethings not right here, not sure what it is though. Finish is dry, aspiriny and somewhat astringent. I,m not a big Flemish Sour fan but i have had others i,ve enjoyed much more than this. How do you know if you,ve got an off bottle of this style? Hmmmmm. Thanks Joe!

Aroma: sour with some semi-sweet chocolate, mustiness, minerals, and coffee grounds
Appearance: dark, dark brown-->black, tan head, lacing
Flavor: very interesting--sourness with coffee, semi-sweet chocolate, dark fruits, maybe some red grape skins, and oak
Palate: smooth with sourness; interesting coffee grounds/semi-sweet chocolate chip aftertaste
Overall: interesting combination of flavors, never had a sour ale quite like this one.
