Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

Pours a clear deep amber with almost purple hints and a head that fades to a thin coating. Nice lace though. Aroma is initially a bit musty with some barnyard, but then gives way to lots of lactobacillus and acidity. Lots of fruits like sour cherries, and a surprising amount of malt also noticed in the aroma. Flavor is nice and fruity, complex with lots of fruit flavors and finishes off with a really nice acidity that doesnt make your mouth pucker like La Folie, but makes your mouth water just a bit. A bit of sour citrus fruits in the end and a clean aftertaste that leaves just a bit of acidity on the tongue. I couldnt really notice too much wood or cognac. This may be one of my favorite Flemish Sour Ales. Rodenbachs are usually a bit too funky (although nice) and La folie seems a bit too sour even for me, and I love very sour beers.

Had some of this at Logan’s RB tasting...appeared to be a hazy brown, not too much head left if any at all..beige maybe. Nose is fruity and sour, yep acetic. Dry and lightly sour in the mouth. Not my favorite style, yet it made me want another swill. I liked the light woodiness that lurked behind that sour fruity door. Full bodied, tart, earthy...it all seems to be there. Maybe this style could grow on me. A memorable flavor..not sure who brought this one but thanks for sharing it!

Bottle, notes from Oct ’05 or so. Deep red, brown pour. Sour cherry and wood aroma, some mild funky yeasty notes. More fruity sour cherry flavors, tart but not overly acidic, with a smattering more of funky yeast and a touch of porty woody flavors. Very pleasant beer.

Trade thanks to Jeff. This one pours out a nice dark reddish color, darker than any other beer of this style that I have seen. The aroma is sour and also has some notes of burnt wood. It was a very refreshing beer for the higher content, much higher than other Flemish Sours I’ve tried. taste is of sour fruit, some sweet malts and maybe a tinge of citrus zest with a somewhat lingering burnt wood taste. A very good brew!!

Sampled at Oakes’ ’05 Xmas Party
Ruby mahogany color, tan head, light lacing. Nose of fruit zest, pungent yeast, fruity malts. The flavor is tart, zesty and very clean and complex. The finish is nice and rich. This is quite quaffable and quite a surprise for me.

Pours hazy reddish brown with very little head. Aroma of oak, sour cherry, slightly sweet brown malt, brown sugar. Flavor is a changing blend of sour cherries, sweet cherriesm sweet maltiness, and a very mild chlorine.

This Panil beer was expansive. It seemed much more substantial than a RGC next to it, simultaneously. It was far less acidic than the Rodenbach the last few times this past couple of months. Anyway, wow - sweet in the most soft woody way with some cheesiness, musty I guess. But certainly not overly dry. Dry like leather dry but without excess acidity at all. A great combination of tannins and softer parts too. I just don’t even know what to say except that the aroma was very captivatng, completely natural in every way. Just like something in your path on your walk in the Glen Helen - the possible number of combinations of fresh and spice and earth all

2007 bottle shared by puzzl and maxxdaddy. Deep orange-amber beer with a thin tan head. Aroma is really fantastic, lots of tart sour cherries, rich acetic character over the soft oaky sweetness. Rich tart flavour with the acidity smacking you right in the cheeks. A bit of light lactic character behind the acetic notes. Soft fruity tannins on the back of the palate along with some oaky character. The best of these I’ve had to date. 2006 bottle provided by gotmos and shared with myself, beastiefan2k, notalush and apoptosis. Cloudy amber orange beer. Very woody aroma with lots of burgundian wine character and heavy toasted oakiness as well. Warming brings up a bit of booze, but also more strong toasted oak character. Soft sweet maltiness and a lingering vineousness. Very oaky flavour over a bit of sour flemish red character. There’s lots of stuff going on in this one, but it still works pretty well. Could probably use a few more years in the bottle to see if the acidity will come up a bit and to settle down all of the wood. 7 3 7 3 15 Deep brown/burgundy beer, thin white head. Big malty aroma, sweet chewy malts, acetic and yeasty aroma. Flavour is also big, acetic, malty, flavour. Sour tart finish. Cherry, woody, sour acetic finish. 8 3 7 4 16
