Commercial Description:
Note: this is the version of Barriquée available only in North America that has been intentionally soured with lactobacillus bacteria. See the Mild entry for the European version (including Italy, although the Sour version may be obtained at the brewery).

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

2007 bottle shared by puzzl and maxxdaddy. Deep orange-amber beer with a thin tan head. Aroma is really fantastic, lots of tart sour cherries, rich acetic character over the soft oaky sweetness. Rich tart flavour with the acidity smacking you right in the cheeks. A bit of light lactic character behind the acetic notes. Soft fruity tannins on the back of the palate along with some oaky character. The best of these I’ve had to date. 2006 bottle provided by gotmos and shared with myself, beastiefan2k, notalush and apoptosis. Cloudy amber orange beer. Very woody aroma with lots of burgundian wine character and heavy toasted oakiness as well. Warming brings up a bit of booze, but also more strong toasted oak character. Soft sweet maltiness and a lingering vineousness. Very oaky flavour over a bit of sour flemish red character. There’s lots of stuff going on in this one, but it still works pretty well. Could probably use a few more years in the bottle to see if the acidity will come up a bit and to settle down all of the wood. 7 3 7 3 15 Deep brown/burgundy beer, thin white head. Big malty aroma, sweet chewy malts, acetic and yeasty aroma. Flavour is also big, acetic, malty, flavour. Sour tart finish. Cherry, woody, sour acetic finish. 8 3 7 4 16

I could wait no longer to open this bottle. the color is dark ruby brown with a ruddy tan head. the aroma is sour cherries, barnyard, leather. carbonation is high, flavor is tart & dry. sour cherry, balsalmic vinegar, a bit woody, and tart finish. aftertaste is clean, crisp, and tart malt. very nice beer but I find it amazing this is in the top 50 and no Cantillons are.

Before I coiuld decant this into a glass I could detect the aromas of sour cherries. I could not get any of the Cognac aging process but the nose off this thing is amazing. the Sourness is evened out with a little bit of mustiness as if this was fermented with shreds of horse blanket from the Italian Calvary. Taste is where I can get a little of the cognac,it adds a little woodiness to it but nothing can overcome the taste of sour cherry. There is very little aftertaste but there is a boatload of sour/dryness onthe tongue.

Suddenly I’m all a-titter over this dark, sour, wood-aged ale. Please, I don’t get a-titter about anything; it was the language in the description. But I am noogie-woogie over this dark, sour, wood-aged ale ’cause it’s a damned fine brew. Not much to look at, it’s got a vinegary, sour cherry aroma well doused with a smokey oaken scent. The flavor is even better, not as sour as advertised, but dry-yet-vinegary, some cherry-like tartness, an underlying maltiness, vanilla, an earthy woodiness, and a hint of the sturdy abv, somewhat high for the style, but welcomed. The finish is dry, earthy, and pleasantly tart. Hot Rats!

Strong oak and balsamic vinegar with sour cherries and vanilla in the aroma. Opaque, cloudy, reddish-brown body with dense, fine bubbled, off white head that lasts nicely. Strong, acidic, woody, tart, vinous flavour up front is mellowed by vanilla notes with strong underlying malt body. Some earthy hops become apparent just bfore the fair finishing bitterness. Very dry medium body with moderate carbonation. Bottle enjoyed with Olivier_MTL and Rastacouere at Hop Devil in NYC. Resampled from the bottle at various tastings and bumped up a bit though comments remain unchanged.

Murky red (almost brown) with a bubbly, unsustained head. Drinks like a slightly carbonated, sour, dry red wine. Some cherry bubblegum and clove. Medicinal finish with traces of metal along the fringes of the tongue.

This 2005 bottled brew poured a large sized head of foamy light brown colored finely sized mostly lasting bubbles that left behind a carbonated hazy brown colored body. The aroma was sour and malty. The mouth feel was initially very sour and dry in an initial flavor rush with a tingliness that soon mellowed leaving behind a dry aftertaste of sour malt flavors. This brew really comes on strong initially what a rush!

500th rating! Bottled in 2005: Deep reddish brown body with a fairly large tan head. Decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is vinegar with cherries and wood and a hint of lemons. The flavor matches the aroma, and the 8% is hidden very well. It’s not overly sweet and is very well balanced. It’s from Italy of all places. Wonderful stuff!
