SledgeJr (2957), Omaha, Nebraska, USA Feb 13, 2009 2006 vintage in the 750 mL bottle from Dirty John’s Grocery. Pours red with a medium ivory colored head. Strong cherries and a big astringently acidic nose. The acid is not so much that the other flavors don’t come through. Lots of cherries and a drying oak finish. I really love the tartness. Wow, this beer is absolutely perfect. Pours a dark brown reddish color. Aroma of oak, funky, and sweet malts. Flavor is a wonderful blend of malts, dark fruits and sweet candy. This beer is like a sweet and sour dinner with a whole lot of goodness.
Awesome! DSG (1501), Tel Aviv, Israel Jan 31, 2009 Bottle. Batch #8, bottle #1277, 2004. Deep red-ruby color with a big bugbby beige head. Funky aroma of barnyard, oak, some musty, cellary notees, a bit of brandy alcohol, some cherries and nice lactic tones. Earthy, slightly vinous sweet-sour flavor with some slightly sugary maltiness, brett some dark fruits (cherries, grapes, light plums notes), oak and some lemony notes, especially towards the finish. Medium-bodied with a slick rounded mouthfeel. Very good but there’s still something in the flavor that turns me off just a bit. Schultsc (478), Henderson, Nevada, USA Jan 22, 2009 Batch #8, 2005 edition. Pours a medium-dark chestnut brown with a medium-large, loose, mottled light tan head. Sour aromas with ripe fruits, oxidative notes from barrel aging, and soft nutty malt underpinnings. Not overly aggressive, but persistent, complex, and intriguing. The flavor follows closelyfrom the characteristics expressed in the nose except for less fruitiness and a bit more malt spiciness. The aging characteristics, both from the barrel and the bottle age. contributed greatly to the complexity of this beer. Very easy-going, well-rounded body with a nicely structured alcohol component. Contrasting palate characteristics with both bright freshness and draker aged characteristics. Quite a fun beer. PghBrewer (10), Denver, Colorado, USA Jan 20, 2009 Very good beer.
Flavor has three distinct flavors: sour with a little sweetness in the beginning, then a bit of bitterness in the middle, finishing with a little heat and oak flavor.
Pours a dark red with little hear.
Nose of bready sourness.
I am partial to this style, and it is one of my favorites. AgentSteve (1334), SF Bay Area, California, USA Jan 19, 2009 Updated: Oct 28, 2009’05 bottle, poured attractive deep ruby with a touch of brown and no head. Sweet and tart cherries fill the nose, with a similar but more complex flavor. Tons of oak and a lasting finish. matt7215 (943), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Jan 18, 2009 Updated: Jan 23, 20092007 bottle shared by tupalev at the KW group tasting at his house. thanks for the share on this one jeff!! one of the best beers ive ever had. this wasnt a popular brew among some of the tasting participants so i enjoyed multiple pours. pours dark maroon with an off white, i had samples in my tulip for over an hour and they still had great head retention. big sour aroma with great malt presence, lots of fruitiness, some cherry pit, leather, very good. this made my mouth water every time i smelled it. the flavour was equaly fantastic, and startlingly complex. approachable for someone not familiar with sours yet redeeming to anyone who appreciates the style. thanks jeff for sharing and jesse ill take your bottle if you dont want it. great beer. JesseM (661), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Jan 17, 2009 Bottle shared at Tupalev’s (thanks Jeff). Pours an interesting hazy red with a small cap. Aroma is hugely distinctive, somewhat Orval like, some Brett, leather, ’horse saddle’ is the word I used, maybe some spice. The flavour doesn’t dissapoint, with a lot of perky sourness that fizzles fast with some lemon lime zing. More of the leather and horse saddle combining with the spicyness to create some sort of weird, sharp distinctive flavour that’s hard to describe fully. A tiny hop presence is there too. Not at all boozy. A bit of pepper, at least I found to be evident. Very impressive beer that I’m very glad to have tried, though I think I prefer the Cantillon for sours.
