Has a blue / purple seal.

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

750 bottle. Cloudy brownish red with a lasting head and tons of lacing. Aroma is obviously cherries with some oak, alcohol and vinegar. Taste starts smooth enough then the tartness become more and more prevelant. Then the wood flavors come through with tangy Brett flavors. Some dustiness and burgundy flavors there also. You can’t drink this and not think of Rodenbach. This is only going to get better.

750 ml bottle, 2005 vintage. Virtually astounding aroma, complex and nearly confounding, with a blend of elements including oak, red grape, tart black cherry, blood orange, leather, faint malt vinegar, cider, earthiness, some herbal, leafy tones oddly reminscent of dill, bay leaf and tea, perhaps some faint chamomile and licorice. Deep, dark garnet color, clear, with a mostly lasting, uneven, bubbly head and traces of lacing. Flavor virtually explodes upon the palate with tartness and dark fruitiness, further aged wood and vinous, acetic tones throughout, with a lightly puckering sourness, faintly spicy, peppery alcohol and a drying effect on the palate. Body is medium, and seems to be quite well-proportioned. Possesses an almost unbelievable amount of character, even for the style.

Murky brown-red. No head at first until it warmed a bit and all the sudden a nice 1/4 inch creamy head and lace. Rich nose of juicy sour cherries, oak, bit of apple, hits of acid, vinegar and a bit of funk. Insane. Medium bodied, watery texture. Tart cherry flavors, oak, bit of wine, lemon zest, chocolate and other nuances all very well integrated. Not nearly as acidic as I thought but this is not a bad thing. Could be bit more meaty (or more carbonation to carry flavors better) for my tastes. Alcohol nowhere to be found, finish is very clean aside from a pleasantly light acetic note that hangs around. Killer stuff and drink at cellar, I drank a bit too cold but man, did it open up. Sexy. One to hunt.

750 mL bottle; bottled in 2006. Interesting lightly sour, vinous, dusty, red wine aromas (a bit of redundancy there, but this is free flow). Reddish amber color (with smallish chunks) and no head. Medium body with virtually no carbonation. Flavor is oak, red wine, perhaps some cherry. This is better than many red wines! The finish is oak, cherry pits, and a very light sour. There is some bitter, but I think it’s the oak. Three fermentations. Good result.

Pours a cloudy brown amber hue with a light off-white head . Aromas of wheat, caramel, cherries and funk..... Flavors??? smooth with a light sourness and a light funk. Al ittle cherry note, some nutty qualities, with a pleasant bitterness. Although I rated this fairly high, it could still use at least a year of age...

Bottle. 2006 Vintage. Ruby brown beer with a tiny off-white head. Tart, oaky aroma with some fruitiness. Tart, fruity (cherry, apple, grape) flavor with oak. Very smooth with lots of fruit and great tart balance. Dry finish has you wanting more. Alcohol well hidden.

Done side by side with Zoetzuur and La Folie. This was the winner. Poured a clear very dark orange-ruby color with a thin tan head. Aroma was tart and fruity with light leather that got stronger as the beer warmed. Light alcohol was also present. Flavor was fruity with a woody middle and mild acidic finish. Medium body.

750 mL capped bottle: pours incredibly dark mahogany with ruby hues and an extraordinarily persistent ivory cream around the edges. Sour black cherry skins with hints of chlorophyll, oak, pine, and vanilla beans. Puckering, sour palate the finishes pretty dry. Acidic flavours with a bit of spicy smoke and deep fruitiness. You know, beers like this one are incredibly difficult to describe, but you must believe they are just great.
