Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

Bottle (750ml). Shared with blankboy, GregClow, tupalev, Dave B and R - courtesy of tupalev - big thanks for sharing this one!. This is a difficult rating - I am still building my palate for Flemish sours - but this was the hit of the tasting and I really liked it. Poured murky, muddy brown with a small foamy off-white head - just as it should be. Had a sour, funky aroma of malt vinegar, yeast, cheese, rubber - sour but not a nasal assault either - balanced. Taste is also sour, but milder and more balanced than some Flemish sours - a smooth, funky blend of red wine vinegar and yeasty tart fruit juices. Mouthfeel was acidic and fairly flat - very nice, smooth and easy to drink - could drink a whole one, which is saying a lot.

2005. Pours a clear copper-orange color with a thick white head. Tart and acidic on the nose, but a bit less aggressive than other Flemish Sours. Nice oak, apple, sour grape aromas come out as well. Taste is sour, but it isn’t an acidic gauntlet on the palate. This actually compliments the overall taste, as the slight tannic notes come out more towards the finish. Some cider-like qualities in the taste as well. A great beer.

sampled at the San Diego Strong Ale Festival Nov 2008, an event shared with what seemed liked hundreds of ratebeerians and enjoyed mostly through a straw, since my face was a bloody mess of scabs and stitches. this came from the RB table full of bottles. redish with a very sour fruity aroma and flavor. This was a slightly differnet sour than i was used too, more along the lines of rodenbach grand cru. very good.

750mL, Bottled in 2005. Pours a hazy brownish red with a few light beige bubbles for a head. Strong aroma of oak, sour cherries and misc tart fruits, a little powdered sugar and funk. The sour cherries and oak are the strongest flavors--lots of acidity--and actually follows the aroma quite nicely--can’t say as I notice any sweetness at any point though. Mildly bitter dry finish. The alcohol is there if I dig deep enough. I don’t think there could be any less carbonation without it being flat--medium-full bodied and smooth. Excellent beer, my gf even loved it.

A fully diminishing small fizzy head tops up a murky dark mahogany body. Moderate lacing. No particles. Few bubbles. Aroma presents malt being medium caramel and hay while hops are moderate and undefinable. Yeast character is heavy fruitiness. Also, there are evident evocations of vinegar, sour cherries/red fruits. Hint of vanilla. Initial flavor is lighty acetic while development is moderate sour. Finish is long . medium to full body... creamy texture... Lively carbonation...

Bottle shared while sitting in the hottub looking at little Cottonwood Canyon, I guess bath water would probably taste great staring at this! Pours hazy mahogony color with a smallish ring of light tan colored head. Aroma is oak, earthy, acetic, balsamic. Flavor is oak, vanilla, earth, balsamic, tart cherries, dark fruits. Palate is medium to light bodied, medium carbonation, finished tart/sour. Delicious, can;t believe it has taken this long for me to try one. it will be a staple now!!

Vintage 2005. Bottle pours a mahogany body with a thin off white head. Lots of vinous qualities with a nice woodiness about it. lacto sour notes with hints of vinegar. Finish is dry with some sweetness. Really excellent stuff.
