Has a blue / purple seal.

Suddenly beer-lovers here in the States are all a-titter over dark, sour, wood-aged ales. These complex, fruity-tasting beers, native to the Netherlands and Belgian Flanders, represent one of the oldest beer styles in the world. In their traditional form, these Sour Reds – also known as ‘Flemish Red’ or ‘Oud Bruin’ beers – are related to real lambic beers: a touch of wild yeast and bacteria coming from the wood give acidity, both lactic (sour) and acetic (vinegar). Trouble is, it’s become nearly impossible to find a true, traditional Sour Red, even in the place where the style was born. The spate of Sour Reds turning up here now leaves most drinkers crying in their beer. They’re too damned sweet! Crass commercialization has brought even the generally recognized ‘classics’ of the style to their knees. They’re pasteurized, and sometimes laced with sugar or artificial sweeteners to make them appealing to the less-discerning beer drinker. The traditional complexity, character, and dryness are missing in action. But now comes Panil Barriquée, and not a minute too soon. Barriquée is the only all-natural, traditionally-made example you will find today, and it comes from, of all places, Italy. This masterpiece is ‘triple-fermented.’ Primary fermentation is in stainless steel. The deep earthy, sour character results from three months of maturation in cognac barrels from Bordeaux, followed by re-fermentation and further aging in the bottle. Barriquée is not pasteurized or filtered, and no sweeteners are added, so it is uncompromisingly dry and complex, and endlessly interesting.

Last creation of Renzo, lover of wood from time immemorial, is an absolute novelty in Italy. These dark beer is aged in French oak barrels. The barrique hosts three fermentations, 15 days in iron vessel, 90 days in barriques coming from cognac and bordeaux and 30 days in bottle. The result is a beer who marries a strong alcohol strenght, 8% with an extraordinary drinkability and a incomparable bouquet of aromas.

Aroma of cookies, vanilla on top fruity citric sourness. Earthy character behind, red apple. Very neat composition. Grape, blue cheese, earthy woody character, soft citric notes at back of palate. Interesting, drinkable sour.

Sampled on the one year anniversary of my first rating. Bottled in 2005. Pours deep reddish brown with very minor sudsy head and a splotchy film over the top. The aroma is very woody and sour with hints of dark dry cherries. There is also some spice, heavy tartness, light vinegar notes and lots of wild yeast. Medium body with a grainy feel and almost no carbonation with some slickness to the body. The taste starts with bold oakiness and sour vinegar - the oak make the vinegar aspect seem beefy. There is some very light cherry aspects. The finish adds a good amount of spice and brett-like barnyard yeast. A great beer to have on this day.

Bottle. Sour aroma like a Flemish sour (it is a Flemish sour, so go figure). A lot darker than most Flem Sours. Small, off-white head. Beautiful color; no lace. Very sour. Why is this brew rated so highly? How is this brew so superior to other sour beers? Top 50? Very good for a Flemish Sour, but as a style, I’m still not getting it. Is this more of a Sour Brown?

Orlando, Fl. - Knightly Spirits, 750 ml bottle. Pours a murky orangeish-purplish with a soft, silky white head. Full bodied sour aroma with hints of sour cherries and vinegar. Solid sour flavor with sour cherries. Very enjoyable. Still trying to find the words to describe a sour beer - but the words escape me - I’ll let the numbers do the talking. Tangy, full-bodied mouthfeel. Well done.

2005 vintage:

The Lure:
Royal sweet grapes trickle onto chocolate truffles. Vinous dryness welcomes the obvious tartness. Blueberries are even evoked in the wooden wisdom.

The Festivities:
Handsome grape fruitiness, clothed in cherries, get sagaciously covered by a tart lemon curtain. This tartness doesn’t last too long, and is thus never overwhelming, even though it can be quite intense in the first half. Yeasty softness benefits from the sweet chocolate within, as alcohol warmth sticks to the wooden barrel allusions. Red wine sovereignty hugs the tartness perfectly, this is of the utmost class. Easier drinking than La Folie, though evidently not for the initiate, a little thinner too, though La Folie is sooo sensual, and all in all leagues in front of the recent Rodenbach Grand Cru. What a stunning beverage fit for kings and queens.

Transcendence:
Respectfully walking the infinite halls of a glorious castle, in awe. 4.2/5

2006 vintage:
The nose is a little sweeter (brown sugar notes) and the flavor is not as fruity. Carbonation is very low and drinkability very high. 3.5/5

I was very surprised to find that this is produced in Italy. Pours a very dark ruby color with a persistent light tan head. Nice aroma of dark cherries and plums. There is also a little funky cheese and some fresh cut wood. The barrel aging adds a unique accent. The taste is pleasantly sour with some wood and fruit to counteract it. The taste has some hay, blue cheese and prunes. There is also a note of dry red wine. This is very nice and complex. The mouthfeel has some cobwebs and is dusty. I like it. Seems like this would be good to pair with a rich and strong tasting cheese.

Tan creamy head; dark shiny copper body. Aroma has gueuze-like cask wood, cherry. Taste is sour, but not overpowering sour cherry, and gueuze wood. Great balance of sour and fruit, but could not drink more than 12 oz of this.

Bottle, 2006 edition. Pours reddish brown with practically no head. Aroma of cherries , apple peel, wine and wood. More cherries and wood in the taste, nice sour characteristic, not overpowering. Slightly acidic and not much carbonation, pretty smooth. Nice fruity taste, this is enjoyable.
