3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 boboski (1095) - Alabama, USA - OCT 11, 2007
UPDATED: APR 25, 2008 A thick white head is slowly dispersed across the plain of a heavily chill-hazed tangerine juice colored body. The aroma is very yeasty and mildly phenolic and peppery. Wheat is strong and aged. Coriander and lesser spices create a facade of trickery that leads to: citrus notes are of banana, orange, otherwise relatively muddled to undefined. Mellow oak and tannic acidity surround spice and sweetness - this seems balanced though it leans toward the spicy end of the witbier spectrum, in a typical fashion shown by many brewers from outside of Belgium. Modest hints of a tartness found in open-fermented Wallonian ales is evident as warmth engages the senses with its ever-increasing propulsion of intricacies. The flavor is bland and much different than the aroma. Sweetness is medium and the integration of tart wheat throws the entire sweet part of the flavor into a chaotic but steady spiral. Bitterness is mild. Acidity is medium to medium-high and cutting, even though the flavor itself seems stuck in the middle of convention. Tartness is light and muffled. This is a challenging taste; every sip presents a different outcome - some are sweet and mild, others seem zesty and earthy and have more tartness. The finish dries quickly and leaves heapings of wheated malt and tired spice on the tip of the tongue and stuck in the curves of the throat. The mouthfeel is light to light-medium, rocky and mildly abrasive, with a carbonation character that feels like most of the zippiness dissipated through the steadfast head. Odd but likable.
