I gave this beer a perfect score. I don’t know how Papago Brewing does it but they not only are making the best beer in Arizona I have to say that this beer is of world class caliber. As many know they have their beer contract brewed for them using their recipes by other Arizona breweries, but their beers are so much better than the places that actually brew the beer for them it is amazing. This beer is really good and has all the Belgian character that is expected. I would compare it to Rochefort 8 or Scaldis Prestige. The beer is a deep rich brown color with red hues. It has an ititial Belgian Candi Sugar sweetness but because of the high alcohol it finishes out nicely and is not sickly sweet. No hops are evident but they weren’t expected anyway for this style of beer. They also bottled 200 bottles of it. I bought a couple of bottles and plan on laying them down for a year or two to age. With 12.5% alcohol I think I know it will age really good.

Nice reddish amber color held up to the light, Cola like sitting on the counter. Sweet semi-strong malts on the nose, sugar candy, yeasty like round out the aroma. Creamy sweet on the palate. Light fruit notes with tangy flavors on the tongue. Nothing too overdone, soft and drinkable. The finish can be a little acidic with the alcohol coming through in the end. With all of that sweet candy sugar I’m in for a diabetic coma. It’s a big beer in a big bottle. This is one brother I like.

Oh brother, what a beer (had to make a corny comment like that). Poured a hazy brown-copper color. Nice aroma, very malty, some licorice, cinnamon. Sweet, complex malt flavor, prunes, some lingering bitterness, some alcohol, but hid it very well. Good stuff . . .

On tap @ Papago
Aroma had the Belgian fermantaion there and also a licorice aroma. It’s dark in the pub but looked like a nice mahagony body and decent head with quality lacing on glass. Alcohol content well hidden in this one. Flavor had a medium sweet candy taste. This was a smooth and easy on the palate. Not a harsh alcohol bite.
Also available in 750 ml bottles at Papago that sell for 19.99.

At the 2007 Big Beer, Belgians, & Barleywines Festival in Vail. Pours a dark brown with a rich beige head. Candy-like brown sugar aroma with very little alcohol in the nose. Great beer that hides such a big whallop with caramel and raisins and molasses thickness. Outrageous, but not the masterpiece that its Little Brother is.

#5 Bottle [Sk8viking great American blind tasting] Small fizzy white head that mostly diminished. Cloudy dark amber color. Spare display of lacework. Aroma of dried fruit, vinous, spice. Over the palate came sweet fruit and raisins, wood, vanilla and Bourbon notes. Medium to full bodied with an average carbonation and mild alcoholic texture. Moderated to heavy sweet flavor with mild bitterness. Lingering sweet malty and fruity finish with a twist of spice and liquorish. 8 / 3 / 8 / 4 / 16 = 3.9

Amber colour, aroma of dark fruit and malt. It has a flavour of dark fruit, malt and caramel. It does however feel rather thin compared to other Belgien beers.

This is a pre-release sample; it has a hazy deep orange color, with red highlights to it. This does not have any real head to it as it is currently only lightly carbonated. The aroma is quite fruity, almost sweetly so, but the sweetness is actually from the fruity aromatics; I get notes of plum and a hint of tart apple.

The taste is still a tad yeasty, but actually this adds to the complexity of the beer. Overall this beer is quite fruity in the taste as well, with notes of sweet plum, raisin, plus a rum-like note to it which includes the alcohol in the finish, which is here yet still soft and does not distract from the easy drinkability of this beer. The alcohol is pretty well integrated and subtle for the actual percentage. As beer ferments a tad more and becomes a bit more carbonated it will become quite a bit drier. I really like the intense, up front fruit notes found in this beer.

Pour is ruddy brown with a thin tan head...smell is spicey with anise and lots of caramel too...flavor is sweet and chewy...strange banana flavor throughout...

1 liter cobalt blue swing top bottle 2005 poured a clear reddish amber with a small lasting amber head. Aromas of carmel, coriander, apple, brown sugar and a hint of banana. Palate was mediyum bodied and warming. Flavors of carmel, spices, brown sugar and a hint of apple with a warm lingering sweet finish.
