UnionMade (621), Connecticut, USA May 2, 2003 Really goddam good. I'd call it a triumph, and by far their best beer, with the irish stout in second place. Pours a blackened umber color with a medium off white head. Aroma is only mildly smoky, with roasted malts and a pretty impressive hop presence taking over. Flavor is bold and clean, with a big roastiness and rich smoked flavor coming through in the end. A touch of peatiness and a bit of raisin in the aftertaste. I'm in love with this beer! Schroppfy (1733), Ohio, USA Dec 29, 2003 Bottle. Very good - great rich body, fuller than many porters. A clone of it's tap only neighbor in Amherst, MA, except that this one is smokier and a tad less cardboardy. I was pleasantly surprised! fishonmyplane (107), Granby, Connecticut, USA Jul 19, 2003 For starters, I have to admit I drank it straight out of the bottle, so my appearance rating is just a wild guess. But besides that, this is a great beer. The smoke is used perfectly and gives it sort of a third dimension beyond the normal flavors of the malts & hops. It was freaking delicious. My only possible complaint is that it's a bit thin, but really the flavor is still very full, so the thin palate just makes it even more drinkable. It's too bad this is a limited-edition beer, because if I could I would gladly buy 12 packs of it on a regular basis. Volgon (2462), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Feb 6, 2004 Dark, really dark brown with a thin big bubbled head. Gunpower smoked aroma in a really good way. Eat this with cheese. Real cheese. Hmm..cheese. Ends light sweet and really smokey. Really. argo0 (6231), Washington DC, USA Jan 22, 2004 Dark brown topped by small tan head. Aroma is strong smoke -- meat more than cheese. Taste is quite smoky, with a bit of sweetness trickling in. That being said, a beer definitely sits under the smoke -- roasty, coffee, some chocolate. Nice medium body that generally holds up under the assault of the smoke, though it occasionally does get lost. Quite a nice treat.
