Oakes (6853), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Mar 12, 2002 What winter palace are they referring to? There’s really only one. Dark brown; toffee, cherries, tobacco, smoke in both nose and palate; full body, light fruit accent. argo0 (6176), Washington DC, USA Dec 31, 2003 Clear red brown body topped by a big beige head. Aroma is mild, tobacco, leather, light coffee. Taste is medium sweet, caramel, some cherry and chicory, light anise, finishing peat/tobacco. Medium-full body. hopdog (4568), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 23, 2007 12oz bottle acquired in trade with jjpm74 (thanks!). Poured a deeper brown color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of caramel, lightly earthy, and light smoke. Tastes of caramel, light earthiness, smoke and some dark fruits. hopscotch (4485), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Jan 5, 2008 Bottle... O-Town Christmas Gathering ‘07... Clear, dark copper ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Decent retention. The meaty, herbal aroma is certainly malty, but a bit metallic. Medium-bodied and sticky with moderate carbonation. Caramel-sweet flavor with only a hint of bitterness. Same goes for the finish... mostly sweet, but lightly bitter. A big SHOUT goes out to jayg for sharing this bottle with the Orlando crew... best RB crew out there! muzzlehatch (4425), Burlington, Vermont, USA Jan 11, 2007 12 ounce bottle from Table and Vine in Northampton, MA (January 2007) consumed at cellar temperature from a Maudite glass. Very deep, clear garnet-black with a moderate light tan head that dies quickly into a thick stable ring and lacing a bit....strongly malty, lots of caramel and a bit of chocolate truffle, also quite grapy, no peaty/earthy character to speak of in the nose but still quite pleasant.....on the tongue, brown sugar and molasses vie subtly with each other for our affections, again there are dashes of chocolate, now there is a little bit of an earth-tone, and some pleasing dry old-world hops at the finish, which dries out nicely and leaves a pleasant warming buzz, the only real indiciation of alcohol....mouthfeel is not as soft as it could be, too filtered-feeling, but the carbonation level is reasonably low and there’s a light, appropriate syrupyness to the texture in the middle. Much nicer than I was expecting, though I guess I shouldn’t be surprised as I’m a sucker for sweeter Scotch Ales. Someone should tell the Paper City guys that "Winter Palace" connotes Russia, which connotes Imperial Stout, not anything Scottish or Scotch....
