3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 arminjewell (4159) - Saudi Auroria, Colorado, USA - FEB 26, 2013
Pour out of 750 mL bottle, dark brownish black pour with creamy tan head, aroma brought notes of tart cherries, slight vinegar, tart fruits, hints of slight roast, hints of oak, wine in there, touch of vanilla and some caramel sweetness in there as well. Taste is a mix of tart red grape, cherries and berries, some vanilla, red wine vinegar notes, some slight oak, funky notes, mixing into a hint of earth, spice, and caramel, finishing slightly bitter, slightly tart. Kind of like it wasn’t meant to be/a bit sloppy, but overall tasted fairly decent.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 onceblind (2532) - Denver, Colorado, USA - FEB 24, 2013
Hazy dark brown, with a lasting creamy foamy beige head. Big nutty malty aroma with tart cherries and heavy toffee. Flavor is semi sour and tart with cherry tones taking the charge, with some boozy toffee and mild biscuity flavors on the finish. Semi tart and sour cherries throughout.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 drjay44 (2126) - Salida, Colorado, USA - FEB 23, 2013
750 ml. swing top bottle. Number 1081 of 1200. Pours a thick, tiny bubbled, well retained light beige head, with some lacing, over a hazy, reddish amber (SRM 15) body....nose is sour cherry, light lactic.....taste is sour cherry, light vinous tones, hints of fig, raisin, hints of cocoa, leading to a final terpene bite with a bitter sourness.....mouth feel light of medium, slight astringency, alcohol hidden, carbonation high adding a light tingle. The aromas and flavors in this beer wander into the area of Flanders Red Ales and Flanders Brown Ale/Oude Bruins. The final flavors are off putting, with a lingering harsh heavy barrel bite. This beer is quite typical of Paradox. Here is a double bock (Dopplebock) that through the use of wine barrels (probably red), with the addition of tart cherries, and various and assorted micro-organisms, has almost become one of the Flanders Sours. No wonder there is a bit of muddle going on. BJCP 7/3/13/4/6
2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Ernest (5609) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - FEB 11, 2013
Bottle (gusher).
Head is initially small, fizzy/frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is muddy brown.
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel), with mild notes of soured/spoiled fruit (kumquat, apple peels, grapefruit juice), brown sugar, cherry, vinegar/pickles, wood.
Flavor is heavily sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter, unclean.
Medium to full body, syrupy/watery texture, fizzy carbonation, moderately alcoholic.
Found this to my surprise in my cellar several days ago, which I don’t recall purchasing (and wish I hadn’t). Alas, another infected beer from Paradox. Spewed everywhere upon opening, instantly kicking up the copious bottle yeast into a mud-like pour. Kind of a weak nose, and sadly the sour off-odors (spoiled OJ, e.g.) prevent the nicer aromas (cherry, malt) from yielding an enjoyable sniff. Likewise, in the mouth the dirty sourness ruins what may have been a reasonably nice, sweet-tart beer to start with. Neither aroma nor taste are horrible, mind you; the infection is not profound...but overall it’s a clunky mess, a bit like what you find in the dump bucket at a strong beer tasting. Sad.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 stumpyiliz (135) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - FEB 10, 2013
Ruby amber pour. Multiple scents of wine, toffee cherry and a lil funk. First sip reminded me of a good Barrel influenced little brother to Consecration. A lil more leather and a lot more variety in the fruit tastes. From Cherri’s to tart apples, pears and tropical.
