3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
In short: A sugary and boozy amber Double IPA with a fun fruity-piney hop profile. The good outweighs the bad.
How: Bottle 650ml, consumed relatively fresh not long after the beer release. Bottle sent to me by mcberko, thanks a lot Matt.
The look: A persistent small white head over a cloudy amber-orange body with lots of small particles.
In long: The hoppy nose is both piney and fruity and it is a fruity character that stands out from the usual citrus/tropical fruits. Here it is mostly exotic fruits, passion fruits, kiwis, papaya, gooseberries, and others as well as more standard mangos and grapefruits. In mouth the beer feels thick juicy with tickling carbonation. Taste has the same fun fruity flavors as the aroma along with pine needles, grapefruits and bitter orange peels. Thatís a fun hop profile but there a few things I didnít like so much. The malt backbone is elusive. The sweetness is too much residual sugars and not enough richer sweetness flavors of caramel and honey. The alcohol bite is too strong for an 8.5% beer. I liked the hop bill a lot but not the rest. This beer came with 3D glasses attached to the bottle with a 3D label, some crazy gimmick here, however this brewery turned down my idea of a beer bottle that can also be used as a rectal thermometer and I donít know if they didnít like the concept or my demo.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Thanks Dennis for the bottle. Pours a slightly hazy orange with a decent amount of white head that dissipates slowly and some visible carbonation. Smell is fantastic, tons of pine, a bit of fruitiness, and something sweet, maybe caramel? Palate is on the lighter side of medium bodied with average carbonation. Taste is quite a bit sweeter than expected, the bitter hop kick is nice and not overstated, and the aftertaste is both sweet and bitter. Very nice, and the 3d glasses are a nice gimmick, but I feel like it could be more bitter.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
650ml bottle from the brewery, served in a tulip. Pours a cloudy orange with a thin white head. Aroma: Super hoppy. Mostly hops. Slight hints of orange peel and cloves. Palate: Thick, foamy, full bodied, long long finish. Taste: Fluctuating bitterness throughout. Starts subtle, gets strong quickly and then tapers off. Nice long finish. Flavour is good, but not as complex as Iíd hoped.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft - Grapefruit and tropical fruit, mango is crazy on this. Cloudy orange with a rich thin head. Grapefruit galore, just so much it is overwhelming. I love it. Rich a long finish, I can't say enough. Well done.

Bottle. Cloudy burnt orange. Aroma of pine, and toffee. Floral. Taste is quite malty (toffee), and grapefruit. Some resinous hop bitterness and pine sap. A creeping dry finish.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Aroma is intense, tropical fruits and sweetness. Papaya, passionfruit, all that kind of thing. Somewhat cloudy, but nothing like Lord of the Hops. Flavour is dominated by same tropical fruit notes, no malt character discernable underneath. But sadly doesnít have any real bitterness that the IBUs would suggest. Great promising flavour, but lacking the punch of a an IPA.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
(650ml bottle) Purchased at The Strath. Pours a medium, frothy white head atop a deep amber, highly carbonated body. Nose is highly green hops. Flavour is amazing: citrus, pine cone needles, young spruce leaves, gum, and garlic. Nice carbonation. This is a winner! A great young double IPA.

Won in a blind taste test. 650 mL bottle enjoyed in an oversized wine glass.
Aroma: Huge citrus notes, ranging from grapefruit to sweet navel orange. Solid caramel malt notes and some out of style phenolics (though not unwelcome in the slightest.) Gooseberry and tropical fruit become more pronounced as the beer warms. 9.5/10
Appearance: Somewhere around 13 SRM. Deep orange with orange-rose highlights. Cloudy with a huge white head. 3.5/5
Taste: Noticeable caramel backbone, navel orange, piney/resinous notes, slight alcohol flavor. Again, some slight phenolic flavors (again, totally important to the beers balance.) Solid hop profile and bitterness is balanced by the wonderful malt body.
Mouthfeel: Medium Heavy to Heavy mouthfeel, low carbonation, warming alcohol. Not at all cloying, very drinkable for an 8.5% beer.
Overall: Amazing beer. One of, if not the best beers to come out of Vancouver. Iíve been continually amazed by P49 and this takes the cake. Balanced, boozy, huge fruity and caramel nose. More along the lines of amarillo in terms of hop body. Really liking the Mosaic hops. 4.4/5
