COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pour this medium-bodied Imperial IPA for a bit of snap and crackle - and plenty of hop. Brewed with Motueka hops from New Zealand, it starts dry and finishes crisp.

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Muddy orange-blond color with persistent creamy head. The aroma is powerful, fruity; tropical fruits, litchi, papaya. Smooth mouthfeel, round; a bit too sweet, the rice probably contributes to the lack of character; but the hopping seems well done, with the correct bitterness and a very strong fruit component.
Some elements are good, but altogether they don’t blend well. Cloying.

Cloudy tan, bubbly head, aroma is orangey, tangerine with subtle malts and yeast in the background. Earthy and somewhat dull citrus - muted by the large amount of yeast in the glass I suspect. Unsurprisingly, I don’t get much rice.

650mL bottle, pours an opaque cloudy orange with a medium white head. Aroma is super dank, with loads of pot, earthy hops, and biscuity malt. Flavour is quite odd, with loads of super dank, earthy hops, pot, and herbal notes. The rice probably contributes to some of the weirdness. It’s the dank, herbally, almost skunky notes of the hops that shine here. Very enjoyable stuff - too bad it’s a one-off.

Enjoyed on tap at Bar Volo.Very smooth, tasty and interesting balanced hoppy ale. Rice sugars make it a little saki-like. One of the brewery’s better creations.

650ml bottle. Might be slightly old in the tooth but not more than a month or 2. Hazed golden pour into my ipa buttplug glass, large foamy white head that sticks for awhile leaving nice lacing. Sadly the aroma is quite malty, almost barleywine territory, like caramel rice cereal. If it is all mouteka that is quite a fragile hop variety imo. Flavor is again malty, there is a decent lemon limey hop characteristic and a bit of finishing bitterness but the caramel note dominates. I also have a lugged nose so everything is against this beer on this one.

Pale orange cloudy/murky pour. The nose is bright and fruity. Orange and mango with a seam of sweet pale malt running through it. A bit of soft resinousness and a touch of pepper. It’s got a little bit of light fruit. There is a good balance of malt and hops with the sweetness balancing the fairly light bitterness. A touch of alcohol detectable on the finish but it helps lighten the body a bit as well. Pretty nice brew, really.

2013-10-23. Hazy dark orange amber small off white head. 3+ Flavour has tons of lovely orange citrus character, light alcohol in the finish. Aroma is interesting with sort of lightly grainy character, fairly alcoholic overtones, mild hops. Smooth average plus palate. 3+ Pretty nice! On tap at Volo, Toronto

My Bottom Line:
Oranges, flowers and resins ride alcohol and hefty sugars in this oily Imperial IPA.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A frothy head of foam tops the murky orange.
-Alcohol is a bit too prominent for my tastes in the style.
-Even though they used a lot of rice in here to dry the body out, it seems they’ve also thrown in a healthy dose of caramel malts... In any case, the body is not close to feeling dry, sadly...
-Drinkability is understandably low.
-Hops could be brighter in the flavor profile. But this bottle may not be the freshest too... No way to tell since there is no date on the bottle...
-The finish is rather limp for any kind of IPA.
-Execution and clarity-wise, this is far from the quality of Flying Fish’s own Rice Imperial IPA.

Bottle.

Bottle - Skunky hops with a bit of grapefruit. Hazy gold with a nice head. Tastes exactly as it smells with the spicy, earthy hop notes. Unfortunately that is it, a one trick pony with very little body as well. A decent drink but nothing to write home about.
