This Belgian style ale is rich in history as well as flavour. Traditionally brewed by Trappist monks far from the influence of the modern world, this complex ale starts with malty sweetness and finishes medium dry, with a touch of piety.

Rating #1120 - 06.06.2014 - Wondering what all I traded @foxjunk for these. Clear, amber pour with a foamy tan head, medium retention. Aroma is yeast, malts, mild spiciness. Taste is sweet caramel malts, tempered with a spicy edge that really establishes this beer on the palate. Lots of plum, raisin notes. Much better than reviews suggest.

Lots of caramel, with some sugar and a deep, sour finish. Nice balance, kinda foggy, and plenty of heft at 9.8%.

Pours a hazy dark brown with a light brown head that dissipates quickly into a ring. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar, Belgian yeast phenolics and dark dried fruits. Taste is sweet caramel, brown sugar with a bit of carmelization, dark dried fruits like raisins/prunes and some nice alcohol phenolics on the finish. Big full bodied beer a d a semi dry finish make this a great Belgian dark strong... Can only imagine how much better this gets with age.

Sampled at ESBLS. Dark brown with a beige head. Earth and cinnamon is smelled. Rich malts, too. Those malts lead. This has a Trappist aspect. A lot of rich malts and yeast. Very soft fruit. Feel is just a little thin. I do like this.

jamesewelch picked this 500 mL bottle up at Beverage Center, which he opened at a BYOB restaurant, Tiny Thai.

Pours a murky light brown with which a thin off white head 1 finger in length stood.
Aromas of chalk, grape juice, nail polish, unripe lemons, and cucumber water.

Tastes the same with the addition of prune juice, Belgian yeast, and seaweed.
Remarkable mouthfeel (medium bodied bordering full), but had smelt frankly horrendous, and hadn’t tasted much better. Just one of those beers, I guess....
Hops, if notable, were on the herbal side.

Super pass!

22oz bottle

Aroma: Very malty, sweet, caramel, toffeee

Appearance: Brown, clear, off white head

Taste: Heavy Sweet

Palate: Light body, oily texture, very dry finish

Overall: Very malty. Not a lot of Belgiany yeast or aromas. Almost like a dubbel, but not quiet. No hop presence, just pure maltiness. If I was blind tasting, I’d never guess it was a Belgian beer because of the maltiness. Very dry finish.

Pours coppery amber. Thin, foamy white head. Aroma is toffee, clove and raisins. Taste is sweet, rich toffee, wheat, plums and a touch of raisin. Finishes with notes of clove spice, and a faint alcohol heat. Rich and full bodied, slightly sticky, very soft carbonation. Not bad, but a bit overwhelming.

In bottle .. aroma of toffee and raisins. Poured a nice hazy brown color ... looked like a dubbel. Taste was similar to the aroma, though quite sweet and almost a creamy texture. Overall OK, but in the league of the good Belgium beers .. I wouldn’t buy again

Nutty, slightly fruity, sweet dark belgian ale, something like a dubbel but without the pronounced estery notes. Interesting, but nothing special.

Bottle from Brewfest. Dark brown with ring and a little lace. Nice caramel and spicy herbal aroma with dark bread and a touch of alcohol. Very sweet and very fruity with caramel and cherry and some tobacco bitterness with a touch of cough syrup and alcohol. Medium full body and decent medium soft Belgian palate. Too fruity and sweet IMHO. Still pretty good.
