3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Appearance: beer is pitch black, with a strong light behind it you can see a very nice red color, appears to be clear, pours with a large tan head that is very dense
Aroma: strong hop citrus, also pine, grass, strong coffee as well, chocolate, dark roast, very complex
Taste: coffee is probably predominate but a strong hop presence up front as well, hops are grass and pine, citrus, can't deny the chocolate is there
Palate: heavy mouthfeel, bitter and coffee aftertaste, average carbonation
Overall: my first black ipa, very complex, strong hop presence and also strong dark roasted malt presence, very complex aroma as well. Like a porter and ipa mixed together

ottle shared at Fear Tuesday Tasting (Downers Grove, IL). Pours a richly blackish pour, some nice deeper near opaque body with some brownish ruby glow, copper and frothy tannish head atop dies to a decent ring, mellow lacing atop. Aromas are richly citrusy hopped, some nice grapefruit, pine and florals. Gentle hop fruit influence, dry and bitter with touches of grass. A touch toasty, bready, and mellow carmelized feel. Nice vibrant hop and rind presence. Initial is firmly hopped, nice bitterness with decent grapefruit rind, toast and florals. A bit of pine and soap with some gentle carmelized and toffee, biscuity malts into the middle. The hop element starts to show some deadened elements, earthy and floral quickly moves to a firmer malt body, coupled with some toast, caramel. Just a faint girthy feel. The dry and bitter qualities, are still there but donít lead the backend like the front. Some sweetness, girth. Finish is more earthy hops, dry and decent bitterness. Some touches of pretzel, toast, faint cocoa elements. Nice medium hop elements. Overall, a solid beer that tapers off fairly quickly. Ok. Nose is quite lovely

Dr. Hoptagonís hops are appropriately forward for a beer named Dr. Hoptagon, more so than many black IPAís. The aroma is chock full of hops as well. The malt is rather dark and a bit too toasty for me but his is only evident at certain stages of an evolution that occurs as the beer sits in the glass and warms. The flavor is complex but not wildly so.
