3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from the brewery and drunk at home on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Black dark brown beer with a lasting tan head. Chocolate and lime/lemon on the aroma. But mostly chocolate but lovely chocolate. Again it’s just full and clean and fautless in the mouth. Roasty chocolate flavour. Hoppy chocolate lime. Strange but quite nice at the same time.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Short: A properly executed black saison focusing on dark bread
Origin: Bottle Size: 330ml Glass: Tired Hands oversized stemware Price: Gift Date: 1/9/14
Long: Thank you Leighton for this one! A clear, deep cola pour generates a mega, rocky coffee beige foam. Excellent formation and retention. Nose is dusty, farmy, cocoa powder, deep pumpernickel bread, torched sugar, really fresh dark bread, vanilla. Taste is bitter, dark bread, unsweetened cocoa powder. Quite the dusty mouthfeel with higher aeration as expected for style but feeling a bit too chalky. Still, a well done black saison which is asking for trouble.
Flaws: Overly chalky mouthfeel
Skill Level: High, proficiency at difficult styles

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
330 ml bottle from Ales By Mail, served in a Teku. Bottled on 07-10-2013. Pours a dark brown colour, no light passing through, with a huge and persistently fluffy dark beige head. Great lacing retention. Looks pitch black in the glass. Less roasted/chocolaty aroma than I was expecting, with the earthy and spicey presence still dominating. Saison yeast notes, a bit of liquorice and just a hint of smoke/ash. Much more roasted in the mouth, with some vanilla and dark chocolate qualities. A bit of hops resin and pine needles as well. Glorious texture, with a velvety and luscious mouthfeel. Quite dry, medium body and lively carbonation. Damn fine!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Very dark brown with a beige head. Aromas are coffee with nutty dark chocolate and blackberry. Yeasty with light cheesy funk. Hints of marzipan with woody wine barrel. Some pink grapefruit. Flavours are blackberry with hints of cherry. Roasted, dry coffee with vinous aspects. Woody with lemony yeast and a fruity bitterness and an arid, pithy dry finish. Perhaps a little thin bodied and fizzy but still good.
