puggy211 (576), cordova, Tennessee, USA Feb 24, 2009 Pours a clear dark amber, very thin head. This was very very sweet big caramel, brown sugar taste, with a very nutty and malty aftertaste. jbuzz (658), South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Feb 17, 2009 A very easy Doppelbock. lightly carbonated, toasted malt, toffee and spice. Rich and nice. RedSox2004 (353), Pacific Palisades, California, USA Feb 14, 2009 Poured clear brown with a dense one-finger head, ok retention and minimal lacing. Strong malt notes on the nose, featuring toffee and caramel. Taste is similar, with a hint of bitterness toward the end. Medium to full bodied, lightly carbonated, and a full toasted malt aftertaste. Bullit (1300), Glasgow, Scotland Feb 12, 2009 Amber colour, off-white head. Aroma of toasted malts. Flavour has roasted malts, toffee and spices. Alcohol well noticable. Ok beer. Pours clear, dark amber, with a creamy off-white head that fades into a thin cap. Very translucent, and a bit off from what I’ve come to consider as the norm for the style.
Nose is very malty, lots of toffee and caramel notes, with a big, fruity presence too - caramel covered apples, only with a bit of a toasty, molasses-like lightly bitter presence in there as well.
Taste is generally caramel sweetness, some lightly toasty bitterness in the back of the mouth that never emerges entirely from the malty sweetness, and resembles, again, molasses, or slightly-burned caramelized sugar. Toasty at points. A lightly fruity presence on the finish, which like the nose, comes across as caramel-covered apples. The nose and the taste with this one seem to mirror each other quite closely.
Mouthfeel is a bit syrupy, low carbonation. Sticky. Maybe a bit undercarbonated.
Certainly not my favorite dopple bock. To me, this one almost comes across more as an English Barleywine. Still, It’s a pleasant beer, and I wouldn’t turn one down - there are just a number of examples of this style I’d pursue first (Curator, Korbinian, Celebrator, Troegenator...). ericandersnavy (1039), crossroads, Texas, USA Feb 8, 2009 12 oz. bottle. poured an amber/orange with an off white head. aroma of caramel malt, spices, and some orange zest. flavor was caramel, spices, alcohol and a nice bitter. medium body with high carbonation. i was surprised this was as good as it was. BrotherGrendel (545), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Feb 8, 2009 Aroma- Strong malt aroma, modest toasty, minimal hops, no diacetyl, low fruity esters of prunes and dark fruit, moderate alcohol
Appearance- Dark amber hue with orange highlights, good clarity, minimal off-white head quickly dissipates, minimal legs
Flavors- Rich and thick caramel flavors, significant melanoidins and moderate toasty flavors, clean lager yeast, no diacetyl, light essence of dark fruits, light alcohol smoothness near the end, slight hop bitterness, sweet finish
Mouthfeel- Full-bodied, moderate carbonation, very smooth texture
Overall- The prototype doppelbock style, rich and sweet malts dominate throughout with a smooth and creamy texture, very clean and crisp flavors, easy-drinking as the alcohol is well masked behind the malt profile, no discernible flaws here
nhamilton (58), Cibolo, Texas, USA Feb 4, 2009 More of an amber to yellow apeparance. Forms a medium tan colored head. Easy taste that doesn’t cause a smirk. Goes down smoothly with no bitterness.
