COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

500 ml bottle purchased at Royal Liquor in KCMO. Best before 05/11 L15001V marked on the label. Pour is a very hazy orange brown with a one inch light tan head that falls noisily and pretty quickly. Aroma is apple cherry fruit sweet malt, honey, some straw floral (dried flowers?) along with a dusty mechanical mild dirtiness (this clears quick). Taste is cleaner, though still is pretty heavy on the fruit sweet maltiness. The straw and floral is present as well, and as the beer warmed the straw integrated nicely with the honey fruit sweetness of the malt. There is a touch of alcohol heat in the back, but does not detract at all. Palate is medium bodied, nicely unfiltered, mildly cloying and pleasantly warming aftertaste.

(Bottle) Smells sweet, like grape and figs. Slightly dark amber colour. Bit thin mouth feel but a nice almost liquorice aftertaste. Nice beer

Slightly hazy amber. Poured into a mug from a 12 oz. bottle. Small with white head that reduces to a small ring. Small carbonation bubbles in the glass. Aroma is of dark fruit especially raisins. Taste is of sweet malt and raisins. The ABV is 7.9% is very well hidden. Toward the finish there is a rye bread flavor after it warms. The finish is somewhat dry. Overall, for the style if available I would buy again. It’s tasty. Thanks for the bottle LiteWait!!

Pours a fuzzy copper. More orange than brown with not much head at all. Smells of butterscotch and sweet bread. The taste is big, smooth, and creamy. Lots of butterscotch, but a bit of a sour bite in the finish. Some late alcohol and sweetness, too. It’s quite good. I’d put it in the top tier of doppelbocks, but I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite.

0.5L bottle in Berlin. Pours a caramel brown. Smells of roasted malt and molasses. Mouthfeel is thick with a full flavor of toasted malt, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, wheat, slight bitterness, and alcohol. Morphs from sweet in to slight bitterness In the finish. Quite good. Puts other similar beers to shame.

It has deep amber color with a thin head that disappears quickly. Has a very smoky malted aroma with a touch sweetness. The taste is very similar but finishes with a mild sweet and sour taste. A very interesting brew indeed and I’m glad I tried it. This is as close to the Doppelbock I had in the army while in Germany back in the 1980’s.
