Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jun 17, 2008 THOUGHTS: A nice beer. This may have been the first doppel, but others have perfected the style. It does get much better as it warms. Very nice, but not as complex as some doppels or as intense as others. Bonus point for creating one of my favorites styles.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a medium copper with an average-size, off-white head that mostly diminished. The aroma was nice but weak. There was some grain and molasses along with apple, cherry, tobacco, slight alcohol and maybe some red wine. The initial flavor was lightly to moderately sweet and lightly acidic; while the finish was moderately sweet, lightly acidic and moderately to heavily bitter with an average duration. There was caramel malt, red wine, cherries a little alcohol and some apples as well. The medium body was creamy then dry in the back with lightly fizzy carbonation and a light astringent and light to moderate alcoholic finish. leninthedesert (112), Nevada, USA Jun 14, 2008 Fantastic beer...had the pleasure of enjoying this one on tap at the Yard House in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tremendous, rich, malty flavor with strong notes of fruit. Some alcohol in the finish, but still ends on a sweet note. paulsutter (8), Tennessee, USA does not count Jun 13, 2008 nice clear golden brown appearance, thin non-lasting head. Begins with a sweet malty taste which is quickly overshadowed by a chemically alcohol taste that was all that lingered. I drank half of it and poured the rest out. It was one of the least agreeable beers i’ve tasted. SuperDave70 (1157), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA Jun 10, 2008 Clear amber pour with a small foamy head. Rosted caramel malt aroma. Sweet malty flavor with a bit of spicy hop on the finish. Pretty standard. BeerGestapo (725), Windsor, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 6, 2008 (GERMAN) Pours a orange / amber color with a dissipating white head. The aroma is of caramel, honey, and figs. With a mild malt taste that hides the 7.9 % very well, and leaves a nice warm finish. Pretty good, But not quite what i expected. jeffwilliams11 (310), hooterville, Michigan, USA Jun 1, 2008 this is a malty dream. spicy and caramelly, very little hop presence at all. far too easy drinking at almost 8%. vulcanmeister (102), La Grande, Oregon, USA Jun 1, 2008 Bottle pours a nice dark reddish-brown with a light tan head that quickly dissipates. The aroma is malt and a caramel sweetness that is intoxicating. Nice sweetness and creamy mouth feel, with malt and hops and a slow bitter sweet warming finish. To be savored. Kavu (94), Jyväskylä, Finland May 31, 2008 Dark brown color. A nice malty aroma which follows to the strong flavor. Not my favourite style of beer, but it’s quite good as what it is.
