Commercial Description:
The Paulaner Salvator with its strong, typically malty taste is the original Paulaner. The bottom-fermented Doppelbock-Bier unites the finest hops and dark barley malt. The Paulaner monks served Salvator as a replacement for food at Lent. Their most famous brewer was Brother Barnabas, who was the head of the Paulaner monastery brewery starting from 1773. Its original recipe is today almost the same as it was in Barnabas' time. In order to protect the original recipe, Paulaner had the trade mark "Salvator" patented in 1896.

Full malt backbone. Not too much carbonation with lacey pour. Low bitterness. A flowery sweetness in the first sip. I like it, and always have. A model of consistency from year to year.

6-pack from Total Wine, River Edge, NJ...bottle pours clear copper with an off-white head...mildly sweet aroma, kind of like candy corn...flavor is mildly sweet too, malts, bit of a metallic aftertaste...kind of reminds me of the "Old Speckled Hen" but better...this is the fourth Doppel I’ve rated (not OSH which is an ESB) and they’ve all been drastically different...keeping me honest...

Pours with an off-white foamy head that goes in about 45 seconds. Clear amber body. Aroma is of metal and amber malts. Taste is sweet malts and a bit of salt. Syrupy mouthfeel with nice lively carbonation.

Clear amber pour with small off-white head. Loads of malt on the nose. Sweet, but not overly so. Really lovely aroma. Taste is sweet but not cloying. Mild fruit taste... apple, golden raisin, more malt, a little yeast. This is a pleasant brew.

Had this one bottled in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, thanks Slothgar! An outstanding dopplebock, probably the best I’ve ever had. Dark orange pour with a bubbly white head, sweet, molassasy nose, very clean taste, sweet and uncomplicated, raisin, apple and allspice. Strong finish yet very highly drinkable. Outstanding.

Bottle. Moderate aromas of light bread and nutty for the malt, light notes of herbs and earth for the hops and yeast, and a background of toffee and a hint of alcohol. Head is small, fizzy, off-white, with good lacing and is fully diminishing. Color is a clear reddish brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and finishes moderately sweet and lightly acidic and bitter. Palate is light to medium, slightly creamy and has a lively carbonation. It finishes lightly alcoholic. An excellent beer to accompany a german game type dinner.

Sweet, heavy aroma of caramel and roasted malt. Solid amber, clear pour. Full mouth feel with a long finish. Heavy malt taste with little hops. Hints of grape and black pepper, and something bourbon-like, almost like it has been cask aged. It is smooth and easy to drink. Salvator, the Savior, is to have been the beverage that got monks and/or priests through Lent and periods of fasting because of it’s bread like filling effect (perhaps that was before Paulaner took over its brewing). Now that I think about it - there is a certain rye bread quality to the taste. One of my favorites.

Molasses and fruity sweetness with a subtle banana clove yeast smell. Thick body, chewy, hearty, alcohol burn on the way down. Finishes smooth and fades quickly.
